My Computer:

Home built, Windows 64 bit Home Premium, Internet Explorer 10, Outlook 2010.  Norton Internet Security as provided by Comcast.  Solid State drive for OS and few other applications.  Platter drive for other apps and data.  Backup drive present.

Problem Detail:

  1. Open up Internet Explorer 10.  Default page is Google.
  2. Enter search term in Google (i.e., Safeway, Apple, Panasonic, etc.).  Hit Enter.
  3. Click on desired link in search results.
  4. URL displayed changes to an add site and brings that site up.
    1. Note:  Sometimes the URL will change once to an ad site, and then quickly change to another, and then yet another, and yet once again.  This is a total of four URL changes from the one clicked on.
    2. Note:  Repeating this test using the same search term and clicking on the same search result link invariably results in a different ad URL appearing.
    3. Note:  Repeating step 3 several times does result in 4.1 and 4.2.  However, continued execution of step 3 will eventually result in the proper URL appearing.

There are no error messages. The same results happen with Google Chrome.  I installed it to test and it appears as afflicted as Google.

History:

The computer would not release and send from the Outbox a message I replied to.  I cut and pasted my text into the original message to try and reply once again.  I sent the message and it did leave.  The identical message in the Outbox did not leave upon "sending" all.  I deleted that message.  I do not recall the specifics, but I had some problem and shut down the computer.  Upon restart, it could not do so.  Windows tried "attempting repairs".  That failed.  I used the option to shut it down.  Restarting, all appeared fine, even Google searches, until later today, with no power off between time normal restart this morning and problem shown here, taking place this afternoon.

Actions Taken:

  1. Malware Bytes ran.  One problem found and removed.
  2. Loaded Lavasoft AdAware (free version).  Five "traces" detected.  Removed.
  3. Found Internet Explorer modified with Lavasoft Secure-Search.
  4. Uninstalled everything AdAware.  Reset browser so no Lavasoft Secure-Search.

I appreciate any help on taking whatever measures are necessary so that browser searches perform as they should.

Thank you.

Phil

Thank you for this, and your promptness.  But I ran into trouble immediately.  I ran the SecurityCheck.  I noticed at the very top, the following information.

The directory name is invalid.

‘NHOM~1\AppData\Local\RarSFX1\SecurityCheck\’  is not recognized as an interoperable program or batch file.

That was followed by:

………………Security Check by screen317……………..

I clicked any key to continue and all seemed good, until the end, when this message appeared.

Results have been copied to checkup.txt, which should open…  now!
The system can not find the path specified.
The system can not find the path specified.

The text box does appear, but there is no text.  Rerunning SecurityCheck provides the same result

I tested Google this morning.  On my first search, and clicking on the result, I was not redirected.  Subsequent tests have resulted in most of the clicks being redirected to some other site other than the one expected.  In short, no change after removal of the three threats found by ESET.

I have tried this morning.

SuperAntiSpyware

Avast

Kapersky TDSSkiller

See if IE is affected as well.

If not, uninstall Chrome completely.

  1. Close all Chrome windows and tabs.
  2. Go to the Start menu > Control Panel. (Windows 8 users: Learn how to access the Control Panel)
  3. Click Programs and Features.
  4. Double-click Google Chrome.
  5. Click Uninstall from the confirmation dialog. Delete your user profile information, like your browser preferences, bookmarks, and history, by selecting the "Also delete your browsing data" checkbox.

Install fresh copy.

Also...

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it.

  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista and 7 users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Do NOT post JavaRa log.

I had installed Chrome right when this started, found it was afflicted just like Google and uninstalled it, but do not recollect if I deleted profile information, browser preferences, bookmarks, and history.  I probably did, but not 100% sure.  This did not change the problems in Google.

I did not do the Java fix as you recommended.  I really needed this PC back in working order asap, and while your efforts were great and quite timely, I have time during the day (looking for a job right now), and as you saw tried other solutions to no avail.

Given those results, I simply reinstalled Windows 7.  I did not wipe the drive, but did use the Win7 install CD.  This process leaves some other files on the drive (mostly just Win7, Office, Adobe Reader, etc.).  However, upon completion, the problem is gone.  I will keep watching of course to see if it returns.  If it does, I will wipe the drive 100% clean and reinstall Win7 again.

Again, I appreciate your help and promptness, and if something else materializes with regards to this problem, I will report it.  In the meantime, others who have this problem can see, that in at least one instance, it is possible to kill this thing with a Win7 reinstall.
