This is my sob story: A few days ago, I smelled a burning-plastic type smell and the display was black on start up. After a freak-out fit, I hooked my Dell Studio 1749 (windows 7) up to my old desktop monitor through the external video port. The external monitor works great. Since my laptop display was under warranty, I sent for a new one. I got it today and installed it. When the computer turned on, I got a white screen right away. I set the display options to "duplicate" so I could see it on both screens and I still get normal computer stuff on the external monitor and white screen on the laptop display. I tried re-seating the cable; still white screen. I tried starting in safe mode (that's F10, right?), no joy. Is this a cable that's fried or a video card? Please not the mother board.

Please and Thank You

-my laptop is too big for my lap

p.s. No burning smells since the first problem.

If the other monitor is working fine then it won't get a GPU or Motherboard problem.
