Hi Guys.

I am using Compaq 420 laptop with OS as Windows 7 Professional (6.1, Build 7601).

My laptop has Eset smart security installed on my machine.

My laptop was working perfectly fine until few days back, I was watching a online video and my laptop suddenly went blank..and in few minutes it just restarted..At first it seemed odd but since the machine rebooted, I didn't give much of a thought to it.

But since then, my laptop keeps freezing in middle of anything ( sometimes when I am browsing on net, or watching movies or even listening to song). This has become quite common ( happens at least once or twice during a day). This never used to happen before and I guess that incident caused something with my machine.

I scanned my laptop for any virus / malware and my antivirus showed nothing. I am confused if the freeze ups is a result of any trojan / malware / virus or is it any hardware problem..

Please help me with it as I would really prefer to keep my machine working in a perfect condition.

Cheers,

Krish

Please boot into Safe Mode choose Safe Mode with Networking  http://windows.microsoft.com/is-is/windows7/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

and then go  preferably with İE as your browser to   http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

make sure to checkmark ALL appropriate boxes and disable your antivirus before the scan ( reenable afterwards)have it delete at the end anything it finds

and let us know the results.

I did this and I didnt get a single hit on this. The result was something like this :

No threats found.

Scanned Files : 175824

Infected file : 0

Cleaned file :0

total scan time :  0:21:34

Scan Status : Finished

I would complete the 'MiniToolBox' thing this weekend and would post the result soon.

Hi Guys,

The laptop now freezes less but sometimes it still behaves abnormally. It sometimes freezes  ( like once in 2 days ). Today was the worst day - when I tried starting my system, first it went blank and then I got an error saying that 'log in initialization' or something had failed. I had to remove my battery and try to start my machine again.

Is there anything else that I am over-looking.

Hi

Before doing any other steps verify your hardware components by running built in diagnostic tests. Here is the maintenance guide of your system -

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/CoreRedirect.jsp?redirectReason=DocIndexPDF&prodSeriesId=4158445&targetPage=http%3A%2F%2Fbizsupport1.austin.hp.com%2Fbc%2Fdocs%2Fsupport%2FSupportManual%2Fc02780494%2Fc02780494.pdf

Refer to page 113 to know how to perform a system diagnostics from the BIOS setup. Press F10 during powering on to enter setup screen and select "System Disgnostics" menu. From there, run all tests listed.

If built in self test can't find any issues, download "Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnosis" from the below link.

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=612&sid=3

Install it and open the tool. You will see your HDD is listed in the main screen. Right click on it and select "Run Diagnostics" . You will be presented with a selection menu. First run a quick test and when it finishes run an extended test. Post the result of diagnostics.

Hi tried running the BIOS diagnostic tests over the weekend. The Start-up test passed easily.

But the 'Run-In' test continued to run for over 10 hours.. First I thought that its normal but then the time kept on increasing. Before my laptop battery ran out, it has run around 10 hours 42 mins with 28 iterations.

Any clue if something is wrong or should I go ahead and run the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnosis test??

Hi

It won't take that much time. I suspect some hardware components in the system is faulty. Proceed to test the HDD with WD diagnostics. Run both smart quick test and full test with it.
