Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, I could not figure out where it should go.

For some time now, my desktop (custom made in 2004) has been shutting down randomly. When it shuts down, it does it without warning, and the time between it shutting down varies greatly.

1) My friend came round, we tried different things, took it apart, cleaned everything out (And I have kept it clean since), took out a memory stick.

2) Originally it would not turn on at all. After taking the memory stick out, it let me power it on again.

3) When it shuts down, I have to turn it off from the switch, wait a few seconds, turn it back on, then try and power it on. Often it won't turn on fully, it will power on for half a second then go off again. This step has to be repeated 1-10 times until it fully powers itself on.

4) Checked temperatures using SpeedFan, in the BIOs it says the computer is in the 30c while SpeedFan says its at 50c. The computer has been hotter before in the summer periods and not turned itself off. It started happening just before christmas when temperatures were really low all over.

5) Tried a different power supply in it, but it didnt seem to work at all. I am poor and unable to go out and buy different components to "test" what is working and what is not. Also I don't know anybody who would let me borrow parts.

6) The length of time it stays on varies greatly:
-If I just web browse, do nothing too stressful, it can stay on for 6-18 hours.
-If I play my online game (2002 graphics), it can stay on for 2-8 hours.
-If I play a new game (Fifa 13), it will stay on for only 1-3 hours.

7) My drivers are kept up to date, specially my graphics and sound cards.

8) I scan my computer regularly for viruses with Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, the Windows Malicious tool, as well as use other programs like Ccleaner to keep the clutter down

9) Tried my hard drive in someone elses computer so I could back up my files (when i couldn't turn the desktop on at all), and was able to do that, so the hard drive works fine.

10) Changed my fan yesterday to run at full speed all the time (2000) and it didn't help at all. Tried the desktop with the side panels on and off and makes no difference.

I am stumped, because I can't tell exactly what is causing this, and if I knew exactly what was causing it, I may be able to find a replacement. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I just want to play my games without that fear anymore :(

My specs - Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.2 Ghz
1 GB RAM (2 with the other stick)
Microsoft Windows XP Pro Service pack 3.
NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT

How to Publish a Snapshot using Speccy

If you are using the registry cleaner option in CCleaner you should read the following.

The following was originally posted by Animal, one or our Site Administrators.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:

Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.

Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.

Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.

The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in unpredictable results.

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

    * Ed Bott's Webog: Why I don’t use registry cleaners
    * Do I need a Registry Cleaner?

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

With the problems that you are having you should have error logged in Event Viewer, but none are showing in the MiniToolBox scan.

Have you deleted these logs?

Let's try this...

Please download BlueScreenView and allow the program to run.

When the scan is done you will see an image similar to the one below.  Disregard the area highlighted in red.

bluescreenview2_zps56d29dda.png

Click on Edit and then Select all.

Click on File, then Save Selected Items, save the report as BSOD.txt, click on Save.

You need to open Notepad, to do this go to All Programs, Accessories and click on Notepad.

In Notepad click on Flie, then Open, this will open in Library, if it hasn't opened Documents do so.  If it has opened Documents you should see a file which is titled readme, click on this, highlight the content, copy it and past it in your next post.

I don't see anything to give you when I use the program. The computer does not give an error or a blue screen, it just shuts down instantly. It never resets itself, it just powers down whenever.

Also I have never needed to keep error reports so I disabled them. I have turned error repots back on, and well, I could just wait til it shuts down again and see if it makes one,

Also I have never needed to keep error reports so I disabled them.

That explains the lack of  error messages.

Please post what you find when it happens.

It has been on for a long time, well over 12 hours, so I am just going to leave it alone til it turns itself off.

Ok so I accidently turned the computer off out of habit this morning.

Then I had to try over and over and over again to turn it on. It kept doing the thing where the computer starts for half a second then it just fails. After leaving it alone for five to ten minutes, I came back and managed to get it on after the third go.

I had been playing an online game all night, and the computer had been on for well over twelve hours, but after switching it on again, and putting on FIFA (just to force it into shutting down) it shut down within a few minutes.

So what could it be, a power issue? A graphics card issue? An overheating issue? I can't be certain. Anyway I turned error reports back on, used Bluescreen viewer, and once again there is nothing. Like I stated, the computer isn't crashing and giving any error messages, it is simply powering down, meaning that even if error reports are switched on, I can't see it having the time to even create one when the power is shut off so quickly.

I just have some kind of hunch that the graphics card might be overheating and the computer is shutting itself down to protect the motherboard. It seems funny how I can play a brand new game like FIFA 2013, and it shuts down much quicker then if I played a 2002 online game. It is very rare that it will shut down while I am not in a game, and if it does, its usually always after 8-14 hours of the computer being on.

What else can I do from here?

It doesn't look like your GPU is overheating, in the Speccy report it is running at 52C, the maximum temperature for this card is 105C.

What is the make and model of you PSU?

Please look in the Event Viewer to see what errors are showing up there.

Even if the computer is shutting down in this matter it should still log and error, even if it is only the message that the computer has shut down unexpectedly.

Please rerun MiniToolBox, this time post them in the manner described in the instructions.

Without further information I can't be of much help.

Do you have a multimeter with a DC voltage scale?

The PSU is a CiC. Model 500UB. It has 230V/50Hz next to the power socket, and on the PSU it has 500W in red lettering, and a sticker on the side with 2008 on it.

Which tab in the Event Viewer should I look at? I see a number of errors in System, and a couple in Application.

I do not have a multimeter. I shall rerun MiniToolBox.

Sorry to butt in but let me throw my experience into the mix in case you can pick up clues from it-

I recently had random shutdowns on my  3-yr-old PC while playing high-end games like Armed Assault 2 and Empire Total War, the screen froze solid after about 10 minutes or more and I had to switch off to get out of it and reboot.

Before each freeze I could hear the fan high-revving so I guessed overheating was the cause, and the PC case was certainly quite warm to the touch.

The local shop agreed it might be a heat problem, they said a small patch of paste that separates two components had lost its heat-insulating properties with age, so they applied new paste and the problem is almost cured, because now I only get freezes after about a couple of hours and can live with them, just.

These are my specs, I'm toying with the idea of replacing the processor and video card with new super-duper very high-end ones to hopefully cure the freezes once and for all-
