I just reinstalled Windows XP Pro. I'm unable to get Windows Update to work. If I click on it, a new blank white page is

opened, and that's it. I'm not getting an error message, because I'm unable to even get that far. I've tried it with Firefox,

and IE7, which I will soon update to IE8. Nothing in the device manager has a yellow exclamation point or question mark.

I also tried Microsoft Fixit for Windows updates, but to no avail. Please help.

What are you seeing in the Event Viewer?

Start> right click on My Computer> Manage> Event Viewer.

How are you connecting to the internet?

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I have a modem/router (not sure what it's actually considered) through Bright House Networks. It includes a 3 in 1 for cable internet, cable tv, and the house phone. The event viewer three different choices. The first, Application, has a ton of info. I did notice a number of yellow warning and red errors. Security is the second, but it doesn't have any info. The third is System, and it has ton of stuff like Application does. There are a number of yellows in there as well.

There are quite a few more, which I'm happy to post. I don't know how many are duplicates.

Just an update, but SP2 is installed, and I have a link for SP3 if you think that it may alleviate this.

Without SP3 you can't receive updates which are important.  Windows XP will be supported until 04/08/14, it is worthwhile.

Try this for I.E.

Start > Run > type Control Inetcpl.cp > Click the Advanced tab > Under Browsing > Uncheck 'Enable third-party browser extensions.

Restart the computer, restart I.E.

What happens when you try to run a scan with Avast?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

 Checkmark the following checkboxes:

List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

You have to download Sevice Pack 3, then disconnect your internet, i.e. unplug it, before you install Service Pack 3. Once it is installed, reboot your computer, and lett anything that is going to happen, happen. Then shut down, reconmnect your internet, and once that is done, reboot and go to windows update. Should work then.
