Hi all,

My windows media player stops playing, or freezes up.

I have MS Windows 7 Home Premium.

I tried a couple of tips for trouble shooting - like deleting cookies and temporary internet files

but videos still stop - sometimes a few minutes in.

I downloaded a Windows Fixit program and it found a couple of problems - then showed as fixed.

I am trying to do an online learning program and it is very frustrating as I can't watch the instruction videos to the end of the lesson.

The site I am on for the videos will only play (for me) on Internet Explorer - not Firexfox or Chrome.

I also downloaded and ran a program called Reg Cure Pro - which listed a host of things claiming

to affect the computer efficiency - however it asked me register and I was unsure if it was a paid program - it looked like it was so I opted out.

I also went to You Tube to see if the media player stuck, It did stop on two videos but I could

jump ahead a few secconds and it would pick up and play.

I also get (fairly regularly) message - "Display driver has stopped working".

OK, if someone can help me it would very much appreciated.

Was last here in March - I had a virus called "Google Redirect" and I received great assistance

from "Gringo" and got rid of it...

Best regards

Have you tried other media players to view/stream the video like VLC?

Hi again,

I downloaded VLC media player as suggested - and installed.

I played one video all the way through - but another got stuck again - the flow player loading

arrow just spins without further loading.

My question is - is the computer using "Windows Media Player" - or "VLC Media Player"?

Is there something I have to do to block off Windows Media Player (or remove it?) - as I presume the computer just

defaults to the Windows Media Player...

I notice on Start Menu - the VLC (Logo Witches Hat) is there with words - Reset VLC Media Player

preferences and cahe files.

However - when I click "All Programs" - the VLC Media Player does not come up in the

list of programs.

Can you please advise back?..

Many thanks

Please remove and do not use any registry cleaners to fix your problem. Is this video available online for viewing and or download?

Download MiniToolBox and run the program. Select
List Last 10 Event Viewers, List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory Size then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

I also get (fairly regularly) message - "Display driver has stopped working".

Hi jhayz,

I downloaded and ran the MiniTool box as instructed - the report is pasted below:

I don't know what a Registry Cleaner is - so I won't use one.

The video I am trying to play (which keep sticking) is in a password protected website - on web based marketing.

I think it is a vimeo (?) video. You can watch it - but not download it.

I will follow up link on "Display Driver" - many thanks...

Reg Cure Pro is a registry cleaner or as we like to call them here, snake oil.

I have a question. I'm familiar with Vimeo. Like most video sites, it uses Adobe Flash, not Windows Media or Microsoft Silverlight. So I'm not sure why you would have to use WMP or IE. Is this a paid course and if so, have you paid for it?

Hi frankp316,

Yes, this is a paid course - and I have paid for it...

I have found that if I am using the Firefox, or Chrome browser - the videos will not play on this password protected site.

If I switch to "Internet Explorer" (a browser I hate)...the videos will play.

However, I am finding that the videos freeze up - and I can't complete the lesson.

I admit I am a complete computer tech illiterate (a 'computer dummy')...

If the computer is using Flashplayer to play the video - I have learned something (thanks...)

I mentioned in my original post that I had Windows Media Player on my computer - and the BC advisor

suggested I download VLC as well - then on second post - to run the Toolbox - report above...

Hope that answers your queries - and thanks for comments and advice - I am sure BC will help fix whatever the problem is...

Best regards

Sorry for the confusion as the first thought was a streaming problem using WMP. Since its a web based online video, let's try clearing cache files and some possible PUP or Adwares.

Try clearing your cache files : Free Ccleaner
Ignore the Registry feature of Ccleaner as it is not recommended or needed.

Remove Adware using Adwcleaner : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
Click on Delete. Copy/paste the result on your next reply.

Scan for Malware using free Malwarebytes
Install then run a quick scan only after updating to the latest definition. Post also the result.

Download JRT by thisisu http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/
. Make sure to disable your antivirus or any running protection softwares before running JRT to avoid interferences.
. For Vista and Windows 7, right-click and Run as Administrator. In XP, double click JRT icon.
. Please be patient and let the program finish scanning.
. Once finish, a text document will open then copy-paste it on your next reply.

Run ESET online scanner
Download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe and save it to your desktop
Follow the instructions and Leave the check mark next to .Remove found threats and place a check next to Scan archives
> Hit Start and ESET will begin to install, update and scan your computer.
> After scanning completes, click List of found threats.
> Click Export to text file and save the file to your desktop and name it Escanlog.
> Click Back button then Finish.
Please Copy/Paste the report on your next reply.

If you paid for it, then it should play anywhere. So the first thing you should do is contact the vendor and tell them you're having trouble with the password protection. And if they don't fix it, you want a refund. I believe the problem is with their product, not your PC.

Hi frankp316,

Yes I have been in touch with the vendor - they checked out videos at their end - all OK.

So I just have to continue to see if we can fix the problem...thanks.

Hi jayhayz,

Have done list of things you requested - log reports to follow.

Just an update - after the fixes.

Went to password protected website...

One video played - after briefly sticking at start - then played all way through.

Other videos start - but freeze up - or don't play at all...

Confusing...frustrating!!

As log reports show - Malwares picked up 3 malware items

And E Scan picked up about 8 viruses...

Scan took hours - as I had Seagate back up drive attached

Just a question - when I first got problem - a Windows forum suggested

something about the time lag to load the video cache (?) ( 2 seconds from memory)

then said some action - cant remember (?) I could not find pathway they told me anyway...

Also, do you think the Flashplayer should be reloaded - or checked for updates?

One last point - computer is slow to open at start up - and also when closes down...

Start Up - I get black Screen...Esc...then next screen...Esc... pause...then opens up start up list - Enter....then Windows starts up.

This may be from huge problems I had to get rid of "Google Redirect" virus back in March...a month ago...

Again...many thanks for your advice...ronno21

Ok here are logs etc

1) ran Ccleaner

I'm not familiar with Vimeo... but try using Firefox first only after reinstalling your Flash Player Plugin to the latest version. Then install and run Speccy -

Download Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.

Were you able to reinstall your Video driver? Please post the computer model next time.

Hi frankp316,

Yes I have been in touch with the vendor - they checked out videos at their end - all OK.

So I just have to continue to see if we can fix the problem...thanks.

Of course they are going to tell you there is no problem with their product. The problem is THEIR product won't play on YOUR PC. Finding out why is THEIR problem, not yours. That's called customer service and you need to demand that from them. You can't take what they tell you at face value. If they don't have to deal with it, they won't. You need to be more persistent. You're not getting what you paid for.

Hi Jhayz,

Just an update on what is happening with computer...

I downloaded the updated Flashplayer - the site gave me
a choice of browsers - and as I run mainly Firefox...I chose
"other than Windows Explorer"...

(However - Windows Explorer is the only Browser that these
videos will play in)

Anyway, I went to website after updating Flashplayer - and all videos played - and were
screening smoothly...I could see the download bar was running ahead of the
player dot icon...

I thought great - we have fixed it...

But subsequent playing of the 3 videos saw one or more get stuck again.

It appears that when the play icon catches up with the download bar - soon
after the video will stop.

Sometimes I would stop the video playing...to give the download a chance to get ahead
of the play icon (sometimes the download would continue when I stopped the video playing -
but other times it too would stop downloading...)

FYI these videos usually run 8 minutes to 13 minutes (in session nine - the one I
was having the most trouble with...)

I also went to session 10 - just one video of 13 minutes - it played smoothly then stopped at
about 8 minutes.

Later I reloaded Flashplayer for "Internet Explorer" version 11.7.700.169 - shown as the latest update.

Went back to website and played Session 10 video - played fine but stuck at about 11 minutes
(total 13 minutes). Download bar was ahead of player icon - but it just stopped.

So I am still getting inconsistent video results.

I also downloaded the updated Windows 7 drivers...

And downloaded and ran 'Speccy'...here is the report - hope I did it right...

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/ROekfuXfOA5w13xOrGy8LPT

You also asked for details of machine

Hewlett - Packard
HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC
5.3 Windows Experience Rating

OK, thanks for help to date - looks like we nailed a few malware bugs...

Best regards

ronno21

P.S.
Hi frankp316,
Yes I will contact the vendor again...get them to re-check status...
I notice the website has "type out of sync" when it opens...
however, sessions all open up when I click to open etc. Best regards ronno21

That explains it. You have to load the clip completely before you can play it. Otherwise it will stop at some point. It's a common problem with Flash but it's not a consistent problem. Right click on the player and go into Flash settings. Unclick Hardware Acceleration and see if that helps.
