This is happening for a long time, no idea since when it appeared but every start up of the windowns, I will be having a USB icon beside the clock in the taskbar, even I do not have any USB attached to the computer. I have to manual "safely remove" them everytime and its a bit annoying, not sure either is this a trojan or virus too.

Is there anyway to fix it? Thanks.

Let's try this...

Go into Device Manager...click View, click Show Hidden Devices.\

Scroll down to USB Controllers, double-click to expose the detai itemsl.

Uninstall every item with "controller" in the description, one by one, reflected in the detail , leave all other detail items alone.

Reboot the system.

There are several "!" mark in my devince manager. Here is a list of them:

1. Microsoft P/S 2 Mouse, under "Mice and other pointing devices"

2. Virtual DAEMON SCSI controller, under "Other devices"

Lastly, under "Universal Serial Bus controllers"

3. USB Mass Storage Device

Others under this section are:

1. Standard Enchanced PSI to USB Host controller

2. Standard OpenHCD USB Host controller

3. USB Root Hub

4. USN Root Hub

Should I remove all the "!" mark devices (3 of hem), and the 2 with the word "controller"?

Thanks for helping.

The appearance of the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon is common if the correct motherboard support drivers are not installed. It's typically triggered by a SATA hard drive - they are hot-swappable, and for safety, Windows will enforce safe removal when the status of a removable device is unclear. The fact that several device categories are distressed suggests at least motherboard drivers may not have been installed. USB controller drivers are usually part of the motherboard chipset drivers.

You can certainly try uninstalling the devices as hamluis mentioned, this will cause Windows to re-enumerate devices and if the installation has simply become confused, the drivers may be found.

If not, please let us know brand and model of your computer, if it is a brandname unit, otherwise the brand and model of the motherboard, so we can find suitable drivers. Another approach is to publish a system snapshot using Speccy:
