Hello friends, I've been having some trouble lately (started about a month ago) with my computer freezing or crashing when doing certain things.  These "certain things" can be anything from playing Starcraft, to trying to uninstall a program, running a CHKDSK scan, trying to defrag the harddrive, using photoshop etc.  I'm fairly certain nothing is overheating, randomly the computer won't crash while playing starcraft, and I can go for a few hours with it running fine, other times it crashes while loading the first game.

So next I figured it was a problem with the HDD, running a CHKDSK crashes the computer pretty much 100% of the time so I downloaded the Western Digital DataLifeguard Diagnostic which checks the HDD (ran for about 45mins and it came back with no errors).  So now im stumped, I'm on the edge of just reformating the drive and doing some tests to see if it will crash (which will pretty much mean its a hardware problem).  I fear some important system files might be damaged.

The site where I originally downloaded THDD no longer offers downloads, so I can't give you a link, but it is a free program that tests HDDs, and it is a good one.

1) It can test your entire drive, either SATA or IDE, and give you a list of unreadable sectors.
2) It also has a drive repair section, which allows you to remap the drive so as to remove unreadable sectors from those being used; so that MS Scandisk won't even see them.
3) It also can give you a map of the read times for the entire drive, wherein undamaged sectors show up as a flat line, and damaged sectors show up as spikes upward from said line, wherein the higher the spike, the worse the damage, and the less readable the particular sector is.
4) While this program is running it gives you a constant readout of the readspeed of that part of the drive being tested. It is normal for the readspeed to fluctuate slightly, and slowly drift lower as you get to the back of the drive, but wild fluctuations are indicative of a damaged drive, in which case you should take a look at the read time map; and if there are a lot of high spikes, replace the HDD.

If you give me an email address to send it to I can send you a copy of this program. It normally runs from a floppy drive, but it can also run from a CD.

Do you have more than one ram stick ? . If yes use one memory at a time. By this we can find the faulty module if it is a RAM error.

If you don't have 2 RAM modules run "Memtest" overnight. Please read the following guide to do a memetest :  http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

one stick of ram, i actually did a memtest before reformating, i only did 3 passes ~ around two hours, didnt get any errors

since putting the computer together the only problems i've had are with PSU's, this is the third one in about 6 years, so immedialtey when something goes wrong i assume its the PSU.
