Hi,

I'm worried that my router may be vulnerable to a security attack. I got a message in my Gmail notification bar that said, "Hey this is important: If you ever lose access to your account we can send password reset info to (email address removed) This address is correct | Update this address"
This screamed scam to me so I closed my browser, re-opened and went to Bleeping computer where I read that with user input (like clicking on the above notification) someone could gain access to my computer. I use a WEP code and wonder how I can change it to another type or if I should get a new router or if I shouldn't worry about it, just avoid suspicious requests.

I have an Acer Aspire computer which is connected wirelessly to my Belken54g router. I use a WEP code to protect the security and I don't know if it is a default WEP code or not. The router is 3 feet from my computer. My other computer, a Dell Pentium 4 desktop is wired to the router and uses the wired networking to access the internet. The laptop in another room that uses wireless is about 30 feet from the router and on the same floor and it is a Toshiba Satellite.

I ran the mini toolbox on the Acer Aspire the computer in question. I have just completed cleaning it per instructions from bleeping computer. There seemed to be one more little issue but I thought it was trivial, I got busy and didn't get back to Gary, aka "oh my", so the topic is now closed.

Here's my toolbox report:

All you need to do is login to your router administration panel typically via 192.168.1.1, but yours should be 192.168.2.1 according to the produced log. Once you login go to the security section sometimes it's located under the wireless security, and change the encryption type from wep to WPA-Personal or preferably WPA-2-Personal if your router supports it as WPA2 provides AES encryption algorithm whereas WPA only supports TKIP.

Well, that didn't work

None of my network is able to access the internet now. I used the trouble shooter diagnostic to get back to the Security menu on the computer and changed it to match what I changed the security to on the IP router page but that didn't work either. It still says the security network isn't matched. And I can't get back to the internet IP router page to change it back to the way it was there... from the laptop, but my desktop is wired to the network. Router page 192.168.2.1 will not open from my desktop. I tried to open 192.168.1.1 and it said, "Check your Internet connection. Restart any router, modem, or other network devices you may be using." I unplugged my router and restarted it but the WAN still won't connect.

What should I do?

Thanks,

Deb

Okay I rebooted the entire system, modem, router, desktop LAN and WAN. The WAN is just lost. Doesn't know how to connect no matter what I do.

You may have to go to where your laptop is connected to the ap and change the encryption type in the settings. Sometimes it will stay in the settings even though you changed it on the router. When you are viewing the wireless networks that are available on the laptop, double-click the one that you normally access. Go to the security tab, and make sure that it's set to match what you changed on your router.

Also you can go to where the wireless networks are listed via the manage wireless networks. Then remove the wireless network, and reconnect to the new one with the new encryption type.

IF none of the above works, then the next step would be to do a 50/50/50 reset on the router. I'll walk you through that process if and only if the above steps doesn't resolve the issue.

Hi,
Thanks for your attempt to help me. You have asked me to change the encryption type in the settings. In my previous post I said, "I used the trouble shooter diagnostic to get back to the Security menu on the computer and changed it to match what I changed the security to on the IP router page."  I have re-read what you wrote several times and I believe that is what I did before I got your reply so maybe I wasn't clear about what I did or you are asking me to do something differently that just isn't clear to me. But I went through the same steps again and it will not connect. BTW I don't think I'll be able to use the WPA2-personal encryption because one of the computers on the network is very old, so I am going back to the WEP 64 bit.

Trying to solve the problem on my own, I tried the "add a new device to the network" wizard from my desktop computer and discovered that it had a new WEP code that I did not assign when I asked it to show the code. So that is the code I typed into the security settings on my laptop. After that the laptop could see the Belkin Router. Then I ran the trouble shooter and now it says "connected" but says it has "limited" access. It labels it as an unidentified network public network, access type No network access, Connections: wireless network connection belkin54g. Running troubleshooters and diagnostics again and rebooting the router produces the same result.

My desktop does not see the router or network. It connects to the router via a cable so I'm able to access the internet, therefore I have the desktop's wireless access disabled since I don't need it. But I don't understand why it doesn't see the router. When I go to the 192.168.2.1 website and click on Security, it doesn't give me the same Security page that I saw when I changed the encryption from my laptop. Instead it says Security Mode with a pulldown menu and WEP 64 selected. Below that it has key 1 through 4 with hex digit pairs in each of five boxes for each key. Below that it asks for a passphrase. I tried typing in the WEP code but that didn't work. Why do I get this page instead of the security page where it shows me the WEP code? It was this confounding problem that led me to try the work around that I described above by using the "add a new device to the network" wizard.
That was how I was able to find out what the WEP code was... and it wasn't what I had typed in when I changed it or what it was before.

I also tried cloning the MAC/WAN code and that didn't produce any new result.

So I don't know what the 50/50/50 reset is, so although I've reset the router several times I don't know if that is what you meant. I don't know how to undo the current configurations and start setting the network up from scratch so I'm looking forward to you "walking me through it".

Thanks,
Deb

Sorry for the confusion, but different wording can mean different things.

You went here and looked?

network.jpg

As far as the security goes. Your security is only as good as your weakest device. In other words if your oldest computer can only support wep, that means THAT your whole network can only use WEP. So trying to switch it to anything else will fail.

As far as the 30/30/30 reset this is how you perform it, if you want to do it. But personally, it won't make a difference if your oldest computer doesn't support anything but WEP.

* I mispoke earlier saying it was 50/50/50.. IT'S NOT.. It's 30/30/30 meaning 30 seconds/30 seconds/ 30 seconds.

1st. Hold down the reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds.

2nd-WHILE still holding the reset button down, you'll disconnect the power cable.

3rd- WHILE still holding the reset button down; wait 30 SECONDS, then plug the power cable back in.

4th- STILL hold the reset button in for an additional 30 seconds, then release.

What this does is clear the nvram on the router causing it to pretty much be factory.

To your first question, yes, that is where I looked.
I did the 30/30/30 reset and was able to connect to the belkin54g which is now renamed belkin54g2. It is now both sending and receiving packets, before it was only sending. But it wouldn't connect to the Internet. I opened the security settings from the link on the router and it is now "unsecured" and showed no values for encryption or wep code. I went to the "manage wireless networks" page from 192.168.2.1 and opened the security settings and it gives me that same page with the 4 keys each with five boxes of hex digit pairs and a request for a passphrase. I don't know what that is. It doesn't give me an option to chose a security type or WEP code. So I didn't change the security settings in either location, I left it unsecured then I ran the diagnostic and it says that the DNS server doesn't recognize it. So I went to the desktop computer and it no longer has access to the Internet from its wired connection for the same reason. So I'm replying via my I-phone. Sure hope you can help me out.

do u have dns set to automatically detect settings under the ipv4 properties? Also make sure ip address is set to automatically detect settings.

Also please open an elevated command prompt and type ipconfig /all. what is listing for the ipv4 , subnet mask , and default gateway for the adapter that you use?

I don't know anything about the topics you mention but I did find some of the words like "ipv4" in the farbar tool log that I posted when I opened this topic. Maybe you can tell me by looking at it or you can send me screen shots of where to find the answers to your questions and what to do?

thats my fault for not posting it. Typing this on kindle fire, so trying to make it short. what you will do is right click your network icon thats on the bottom right of your screen on the notification tray and choose network and sharing center i believe is what it says. on the left once that is open , you'll see change adapter settings on the left, click it. go to the wireless on the laptop and the wired ethernet adapter on your desktop, and right click them and click properties. in the middle you will see ipv4 connection properies. ckick it and  choose properties. make sure ip address and dns are set to obtain ip and dns settings automatically.

for the command prompt goto start then type cmd. when it pulls it up then right click with mouse and choose run as administrator. when that opens please type ipconfig /all and hit enter. look for the adapter that you are using and find where it says ipv4, subnet mask, and default gateway. what is set for those values on the desktop and laptop?

I was only able to do this on the laptop. When I click on the network in the sys tray on the desktop the option is open network connections. I don't know which one is the Ethernet. 1394 connection or local area connection. Right clicking on properties does not list ipv4 it only has client for MS networks, jump start wireless intermediate driver, files and printer sharing, QoS Packet scheduler, & Internet protocol ( TCIP/IP).
On the laptop I easily found the location and DNS was set to automatic, no values were given in the blank area below it. I then went to start but I was unable to find a place to enter the command run as an administrator but I typed in the configall and it worked anyway. Here are the values:
Ipv4: 192.168.2.3 <preferred>
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.2.1

The local area connection is more than likely the adapter that you're using. Once you go to the properties of the adapter you should see this:

click on the one that I have circled then go to properties.

The weird thing is, you're getting an ip address from the router, so it is functioning correctly. It seems like it's something to do on the windows wireless connections part. Can you do this for me?

Go to:

Capture1-2.jpg

Then feel this out for me with your details that you have set via the router.

Also try doing this for me as well please.

Go to start and type in cmd in the search box.

then once thats open please type the following in order according to the screenshots.

Also if you haven't done so already, please uninstall the bonjour service from your computer, to see if that will help with this issue.

Also please uninstall the avast! Internet Security (Version: 8.0.1483.0) from your computer temporarily to see if that will resolve this issue.

The ipv4 option does not exist on the desktop. I'm using windows XP. Neither does add a wireless network. I don't know how to run as an administrator but I ran the commands anyway. Nothing changed in how it doesn't work but it did find the Ethernet IP address 192.168.2.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 & default gateway 192.168.2.1

I'm uninstalling avast & bonjour and tried again with no luck.

wow.. this is getting weird, as that should of worked. Being your getting an ip address is also strange. what happens when you ping a website? open up a cmd prompt again. A shorter way being your using xp is to hold down the windows key. "It's the key right in the middle of the ctrl and alt key on the left" and press R while holding it down. When the run dialog box opens please type cmd and hit enter. Type ping www.google.com and see if it replys back. Also try to ping your router as well by typing ping 192.168.2.1 and see if it replies back. Is it possible that you can re-produce another mini-toolbox log for me to look at, to see if anything has changed?

Also, when you try to use the internet on the desktop with XP, make sure you're only using the adapter that you plug the cat5 cable into. All other ones should be disabled until they are going to be used.

Are you able to login to the administration panel on the router successfully using the 192.168.2.1 ip address?

Is there anyway you could produce some screenshots for me to look at so I can visualize this?
