I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and for a several months the computer has been freezing on occasion and I've been getting a message that states that "Host Process for Windows Services Stopped Working."  I checked the Event Viewer and it shows the following errors:

- Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider #7031, #7034

- Application Error #1000, #1005

- atapi #11

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

In addition, the Event Viewer also has the following warning:

"Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller: The network link is down.  Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected."

Are your hard drive and optical drive...connected to the motherboard via the same cable?

Go to Device Manager...scroll down to IDE-ATA/Atapi Controllers.  Double-click that.

For each of  the first two items listed as detail in that category...

    a.  Double-click the item (Primary IDE Channel)

    b.  Go to Advanced Settings tab.  Post the 3 lines of settings reflected for Device 0 and Device 1, please.

I think that you have a hard drive problem but I've been wrong before :).

First item should be your optical drive...second item s/b your hard drive.

Again...are they connected to the motherboard on the same cable?  If so...your hard drive should be on the end connector, with your optical drive on the "middle" connector on the cable.

If they are on separate cables, it doesn't matter.  If they are not, your Port 1 errors reflected in Event Viewer...refer to your hard drive (numbering starts with 0).

This is a Dell Vostro laptop that has never been serviced.  I have never opened it up and messed with the cables.

If you give us the model Vostro...I can try to look up the specs/manuals for the system.

I asked about the connections thinking that this was a desktop.

It appears to me that your hard drive has problems...but I would run Dell Diagnostics to confirm/refute that theory.

Hi Louis,

Thanks again for your help.  Below are the results of the Dell PC Diagnostics test.  Looks like I do have a hard drive issue.

Tested and Needs Attention: (1)

Hard Drive: WDC WD1200BEVS-75UST0 ATA Device
SMART Short Self Test

Your hard drive is operating outside of normal parameters and should be replaced. If the system is still under warranty please contact Dell Technical Support for additional assistance.
Note: Warranty details can be viewed at the top of this page or on Dell's My Products and Services page
