For the past couple of months I have occasionally had problems starting my computer. These problems have become more frequent the past few days.

When starting my computer seems to think it has various options, including: 1. Starting normally. 2. Starting, but not allowing any signal to get through to the monitor. 3. Starting, but not allowing the internet connection. 4. Starting but declaring there are problems and I must use the computer's diagnostics to find the problem. (It never finds a problem.)

The fix so far has been easy, just a hard boot and things return to normal. Lately however the hard boot only leads to another of options 2-4. Once the computer is running properly everything seems fine, until it's powered off and then the problems start the next time the machine is booted up. The simple solution of course is never to shut it off, but I'm not silly enough to believe the problems will stop that way.

So far I've run Malwarebytes on it a few times. All cables have been checked to make sure they are properly connected. The problem continues.

I'm running Windows 7.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should diagnose the hard drive first!

Any other advice beyond a single one-line, unhelpful post?

Hello -

Sorry that your post was over looked, so can we try a few scans -

If your computer will not start very well, can you start OK in Safe Mode with Networking ?

Once it starts most of these basic scans will run in Safe Mode, or can be transferred with a USB stick -

Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Please download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.
Now : Close any Firefox browsers you may have open
Checkmark the following boxes:
•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files
Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt).

Try to run this: Please download TFC, or Temp File Cleaner by Old Timer
Usage Instructions:

  • Download TFC from the download link above and save the file on your desktop.
  • Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
  • Double-click on the TFC icon.
  • When the program opens, click on the Start button.  TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
  • When done, press OK to reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.

Note: Depending on how much data is currently stored in the Temp folders, this process can take quite a while to remove all of the files, so please be patient.

Thank You -

Hi -

Thanks for your response. Sorry it took so long to get back to you!

I followed your instructions above and ran the first two programs. The .txt files are copied below. The third program eventually ran (it took 3 attempts!) and did not ask to be rebooted when it finished.

Hi -
First I will assume that not much has altered since you posted these logs -

Java™ 6 Update 17
Java™ 6 Update 35 - Java versions out of Date!
Java Version7 Update25 is now current. Please remove all other versions from Programs and Features.
Do not accept (untick) any offered Add-ons or Toolbars as they have nothing to do with Java.

Ask Toolbar (Version: 1.15.2.0)

Description: Faulting application name: hpqgpc01.exe < Do you oftenhave a HP Printer turned on when you start the computer ? Just that this error is mainly a HP Printer error only.

Your checkup lists avast! Antivirus but your programs also list Norton Internet Security (Version: 16.7.0.30)
Please visit HERE for the removal methods of your Norton product -

See Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Update and run a Quick Scan with your Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and post the log back here

Then - Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free (aka SAS)
* Double-click SAS -setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to Check for Updates to be so it is current
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here if there are any items except for Tracking Cookies.
Be sure to reboot the computer after you post the log.

So far there is little to go on, so when you post back I will continue -

Again, Sorry I missed your reply -

Hi -

Did everything you asked. The Malwarebytes log is below, I didn't post the SAS log as there were only tracking cookies found. Oh, and yes there is an HP printer connected that turns on at the same time as the computer.

The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced. < Error from above ......

My view is that the printer and the computer are fighting for control at Start-up, and only one should start at a time - (See below)

Oh, and yes there is an HP printer connected that turns on at the same time as the computer. < You need to have the Printer on "Delayed-start", or to have the switch turned "Off, or removed from the computer" so that once your computer has booted, then you can turn the printer on (or plug it in, as per below) as they are conflicting at the moment -

Optionally, you can fully remove the computer from the printer (unplug - simple) and not plug it in untill your system is operating.

The fix so far has been easy, just a hard boot and things return to normal. < To me, this reinforces what I am thinking.

We will run a deeper scan for any other Viral infections (just for a check-up) ....

When (and only when) you complete / altering start-up as above ............

Scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
Read How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus for while you scan -
1. Hold down Control and click HERE to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
2 . Click the ESET Online Scanner button.
3 . NOTE :.For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

- 1. Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
- 2 . Double click on the ESET Online Scanner icon on your desktop.

4 . Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
5 . Click the Start button.
6 . Accept any security warnings from your browser.
7 . Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
8 . Click Advanced settings and select the following:
Scan potentially unwanted applications
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth technology

9.ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this will take some time to download the program for a first time, and then download updated data base (1 to 2  hours is not unusual)
10.When the scan completes, click List Threats
11.Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan.
- Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
12.Click the Back button.
13.Click the Finish button
Or you can find a report at  C:\Program Files\esetonlinescanner\log.txt.

Information on Adobe Acrobat 11 (latest version)- You have Acrobat.com (Version: 2.0.0.0)

Unless you use "Acrobat Reader" for professional reasons, I would just use Adobe Reader Version11

As of 2013, Adobe Acrobat XI is available for Windows XP or later (excluding Windows Vista)
Version 2.0 Acrobat 2.0 was first released during September 1994 for the operating systems Windows and Macintosh. It included: Acrobat Catalog, which creates searchable indexes for PDF files. Searching required a special version of Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Exchange and Acrobat Professional 2.0 was also released, which included Acrobat Exchange plus the program Distiller.

Let me have the results of the scan, and your attempts at Not starting the 2 devices together.

I would start them 5 minutes apart - - -

Thanks -
