Hi

Am using a 1 TB sata drive in a remote usb2 enclosure. With xp pro sp3

The enclosure/drive is causing freezes, failure to boot and or shut down. Sometimes it does work though. When i reconnect the cable error msg often says not recognized or that the usb device has malfunctioned.

Have tried un/re installing the usb drivers although I run into trouble because the mouse is usb and its drive gets uninstalled also, so i may have missed one

Its an old Dell pc,  Celeron 3.6 ghz

Thanks if anyone’s got ideas

If you have no problems when the external drive is NOT connected or ON...that would seem to indicate a problem with the enclosure, the drive itself, or possibly your connection between the two.

Any other USB devices attached?  Any problems with such?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Most likely failed drive in enclosure.  My experience is roughly every 1 outta 20 times the enclosure is bad - otherwise every other time the drive has failed.

Hmmm...kind of strange that you have no errors posted that reflect a problem with input/output or any drive.

You are running that system with the absolute minimim amount of RAM...that won't help it run efficiently.  With that in mind, I suggest uninstalling Search 4.0, it's not needed or particularly desireable, IMO...you have Everything installed, which is more than equal to Search 4.0.

If the drive is under warranty...consider returning it.

oh, thought i did remove search 4.0, will do so.

when i tested the box on another pc i also put another "good" sata drive into it....same problem. sometimes the drive runs ok, as it is right now, maybe thats why u saw no errors posted

anyway, isn't it more likely to be the a faulty external enclosure than HD?

thanks

As I see it...the problem with external drives is that users attach another point of failure/problems into the equation using the enclosure.

If I wanted to test the drive itself, I'd simply remove it from the enclosure and attach it directly.  The manufacturers of these external drives may not make that an easy thing to do.

if you have known good hard drives and they are acting up in the enclosure then the enclosure is bad.
