Hello. I am a computer geek and I love IT Security. When someone needs help with malware, they come to me. I recently found a friend who has PC utilities Pro - Optimizer Pro on his computer. The program looked a little odd at the start, and I found his current AV (Norton) with an expired subscription. So I tried to turn on windows defender, but it wouldn't start. The program was suspicious, so I got my cleaning tools, as the program based on info on the internet appeared to be a rouge. But, Norton Power Eraser and Malwarebytes didnt detect anything. I am very convinced this is a rouge because the following programs failed to start.

  1. Comodo Cleaning Essentials
  2. ESET
  3. Dr. Web Cureit!
  4. SUPERAntiSpyware
  5. ComboFix

I was also redirected before downloading Norton Power Eraser and had to start Malwarebytes via chameleon. I was going to use a rescue disk but for whatever reason, it wont boot to a disk.

What do I do?

Welcome aboard p22002758.gif

Since you ran Combofix....

Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Thank you, but I actually ended up fixing the Issue. In an unlikely set of events, it was actually the eScan antivirus toolkit which detected the rogue. Since it was running in memory, it renamed the file and on restart the rouge didn't come back and I was able to manually remove the infected files. Thanks for your help anyway and I read the link you sent to me. Although like I said, ComboFix failed to start since it was blocked and was therefore, rendered useless. If I need further assistance, I will let you know.
