My kid went to do turbo tax and tried to update IE, next thing I know, I can't do anything. My comcast homepage is goofy looking. On line banking pay bills freezes up...then the real probelms. I can't do system restore, I can't get my updates.

I can't defragment or anything related to system tools? I don;t know what he did.  My system retore is turned on so not sure why it'll not let me go back.

Computer is running real slow and I can't get to half  the things I want to to try and find help.

Right now I'm in safe mode just so I can get here to type this to see if anyon can help me...I can move around a bit but not oo computer savy..if  you're up for hte challenge, here I am.

Patti

What is your operating system?  What anti-virus, malware programs have you run?

Can you elaborate on what is goofy looking about the Comcast home page?

Why did the child try to update IE?  Was it a successful update?

The only thing on my home page is the links to email...

He said turbo tax was not allowing him to do what he needed to do because my browser was out of date.

I don't think the update was succesful.

I did see IE 6 still exists

FWIW:  IE6...is severely outdated.

In addition to being unacceptable at many websites...it is highly vulnerable to known security flaws that have been addressed in later versions of IE and supporting critical updates.

What is the latest SP installed on your system?

I tried to update ie, didn't work. Tried to restore to earlier date, won't restore.
Malware showed nothing.
Will log on tomorrow to see if there are suggestions for me to try.
I really do appreciate any help i can get.

Thank you

added notes, my comcast homepage, does only shows email but not how many etc.. no pictures or news link..homepage is whacked.

malware shows nothing wrong.

I cannot restore to previous state and I know the setting is on to create restore points.

There is the update symbol in my menu bar but when ticked to install, nothing updates..

Not sure what happened, and I cannot seem to get anything to work and very slow to respond to moving through pages or commands.

Louis, what do you mean SP? sorry, I'm computer savaay but not in aread like this.

Louis wants to know what service pack you have on XP. You are supposed to have SP3 but considering that you never updated IE, it's fair to assume that you never updated that either and that would have to be updated first before you do anything else.

Your hard drive status per Speccy reflects "Warning", which is somewhat unusual and I would not expect that to be a good thing.  System partition and temperature for hard drive are fine.

You also have a number of errors in Event Viewer...reflecting a problem with your hard drive D.    Not sure if error refers to insternal hard drive or external drive.  I would run diagnostics on each..

I would run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic on the hard drive, SeaTools for DOS Seagate and Samsung Drives - http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=seatooldreg&vgnextoid=480bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD , following the Seagate instructions.  Run the long/extended test.

You are running XP with 1GB of installed RAM...2GB would probably be the recommended amount (by knowledgeable users) for a system with XP.

Your listed .dll-related errors...seem to be attributable someone uninstalling IE8.  I suggest reinstalling IE8, whether you use it or not as your default browser.  For more on these errors, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/dd441788.aspx .

From where I sit...it looks like any of the above could be a problem or cause problems, including possible infection.

You are running an outdated version of Comcast's Norton Security Suite, which means that you are more vulnerable to malware than you need to be.  Updated version at http://xfinity.comcast.net/constantguard/Products/CGPS/norton/?cid=NET_33_641 .

<<I can't do system restore, I can't get my updates.  I can't defragment or anything related to system tools? I don;t know what he did.  My system retore is turned on so not sure why it'll not let me go back.  Computer is running real slow and I can't get to half  the things I want to to try and find help.>>\

Let's try to eliminate malware from the equation, first.  I'm moving your topic to the Am I Infected forum for now.

UNINSTALL XFINITY Toolbar (Version: 3.5.1.13) which is out of date. (The latest version is 4.0.0.23) DO NOT reinstall the toolbar. It's flaky and may cause issues, one of which is a slow down of your system. While it may NOT be the cause it *could* be a contributing factor.

After you uninstall the toolbar look to see if a program called  CA Pest Patrol Real Time Protection and uninstall it.

CA Pest Patrol is installed with the Comcast toolbar older versions and remains on your computer after the toolbar is uninstalled. In newer versions CA has to be installed by the user from toolbar options, so you may or may not see it listed.

You are running an outdated version of Comcast's Norton Security Suite, which means that you are more vulnerable to malware than you need to be.  Updated version at http://xfinity.comcast.net/constantguard/Products/CGPS/norton/?cid=NET_33_641 .

From your logs it is not clear if you are using the free Norton suite Comcast offers to customers.

Please confirm if you do have it installed. If you do, as stated, it is out-of-date. When you update to the latest version by going to the link Louis provided you will be asked via popup if you want complete protection. Choose NO THANKS. What you will be saying NO to is the CONSTANT GUARD portion of the suite, which can also cause problems for some people. Choosing not to install Constant Guard will not affect Norton in any way.

*side note* Comcast does not have a stellar history when it comes to branded software.

Also your Java is outdated, exploitable and may also be causing trouble. Let's remove it for now.
Run JavaRa
  • Please download JavaRa and unzip it in a folder on your desktop.
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • Click on Settings and Place a checkmark beside Create a log file. Click on Back.
  • Click on Update JavaRa Definitions. Click on download. When this is done click on Back.
  • Choose Remove JRE, since you already uninstalled Java, please click on Next.
  • Now click on Perform Removal Routine to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • When that's succesfully done, please click OK to close the message.
  • Click on Next. Since you already downloaded the latest version of Java, please click on Next.
  • Now click on Close this wizard and click Finish.
  • From the main menu please choose Additional Tasks
  • Place a checkmark beside Remove Outdated JRE Firefox Extentions and click Run. Mozilla Firefox should be closed before running this task.
  • When that's succesfully done you will see a message at the top saying: "Selected tasks completed successfully".
  • A log file should be created in the same directory as JavaRa.
  • Please post the log in your next reply.
  • Close JavaRa by clicking the red cross button.
Reboot the machine.

Removing toolbar and reinstalling norton.

Yes it is the free version from comcast.
