I've had this laptop for a bit over a year now and I find it to be quite sluggish even loading on the windows splash screen, And when I get logged on and everything as if it takes a few minutes for the CPU to catch up.

And within the last few days I've noticed the error messages "GfxUI has crashed" and "HP Wireless Assistant Main Program has crashed" when I startup.

So what should I do?

So far I don't see anything malicious but I do see some issues with your Windows installation.

FSS shows several crucial services missing.

We'll go back to it but couple more scans first...

p22002970.gif Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

p22002970.gif Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

=============================================================================

p22002970.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

=======================================

p22002970.gif Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

I've been running these tests in safe mode, I hope that won't make a difference... ESET didn't come up with any infections though. # AdwCleaner v2.202 - Logfile created 04/22/2013 at 19:09:46 # Updated 23/04/2013 by Xplode # Operating system : Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (64 bits) # User : Jim - KAJET-PCC # Boot Mode : Safe mode with networking # Running from : C:\Users\Jim\Desktop\adwcleaner.exe # Option [Delete] ***** [Services] ***** ***** [Files / Folders] ***** ***** [Registry] ***** Key Deleted : HKCU\Software\AppDataLow\Software\Freecause Key Deleted : HKCU\Software\Softonic Key Deleted : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{0F54B66A-21CF-4548-AE59-A6B83EE6676F} Key Deleted : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{51A971CA-D36E-4D13-A799-2CF0A491D04D} Key Deleted : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{56FBEA9F-EF93-4318-B75F-A96FC7C7BD7B} Key Deleted : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{78B3C85E-44FF-4DC8-B3AD-156F39DC75E5} Key Deleted : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{841FD004-57A2-4B49-BBDB-5897394619DB} Key Deleted : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{E1164984-B567-47BD-A7FF-240C2594404A} Key Deleted : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{E19FDA06-5BDF-43C2-B794-BCD8A4C2051F} Key Deleted : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{FAB076F5-E4DD-4EA4-AFEE-F18BF972B057} Value Deleted : HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser [{D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440}] ***** [Internet Browsers] ***** -\\ Internet Explorer v9.0.8112.16476 [OK] Registry is clean. -\\ Mozilla Firefox v12.0 (en-US) File : C:\Users\Jim\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\8jjv8nj7.default\prefs.js Deleted : user_pref("winamp_toolbar.strbundle.msg", "Winamp Toolbar"); ************************* AdwCleaner[R1].txt - [1741 octets] - [22/04/2013 19:08:28] AdwCleaner[S1].txt - [1712 octets] - [22/04/2013 19:09:46] ########## EOF - C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt - [1772 octets] ########## ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) by Thisisu Version: 4.8.8 (04.21.2013:2) OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Ran by Jim on Mon 04/22/2013 at 19:16:31.65 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~ Services ~~~ Registry Values ~~~ Registry Keys Successfully deleted: [Registry Key] HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{8AC9B81C-965A-431B-8366-E39BEA5050F1} Successfully deleted: [Registry Key] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{8AC9B81C-965A-431B-8366-E39BEA5050F1} ~~~ Files ~~~ Folders ~~~ FireFox Emptied folder: C:\Users\Jim\AppData\Roaming\mozilla\firefox\profiles\8jjv8nj7.default\minidumps [18 files] ~~~ Event Viewer Logs were cleared ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Scan was completed on Mon 04/22/2013 at 19:27:04.60 End of JRT log ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

p22002970.gif Update Adobe Flash Player: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Make sure you UN-check Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus

NOTE 1: Beginning with Adobe Flash Version 11.3, the universal installer includes the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Flash Player.
NOTE 2: While installing make sure you UN-check any extra garbage which wants to install alongside.

p22002970.gif Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

p22002970.gif 1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it.

  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista and 7 users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Do NOT post JavaRa log.

When done...

Download Windows Repair (All in One) from this site

Install the program then run it.

NOTE 1. In Windows Vista, 7 and 8 right click on the program, click "Run As Administrator".
NOTE 2. Disable your antivirus program before running Windows Repair.

Go to Step 2 and allow it to run CheckDisk by clicking on Do It button:

p22002979.gif

Once that is done then go to Step 3 and allow it to run System File Check by clicking on Do It button:

p22002980.gif

Go to Step 4 and under "System Restore" click on Create button:

p22002982.gif

Go to Start Repairs tab and click Start button.

Leave all checkmarks as they're.
NOTE for Windows 8 users. Reset Registry Permissions is NOT checked by design.

Click on Start button.

p22003030.gif

Post Windows Repair log (_windows_repair_log.txt) which is located in the following folder:
64-bit systems - C:\Program Files (x86)\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs
32-bit systems - C:\Program Files\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs

Post fresh FSS log.
