I'm trying to fix a computer for a friend with terrible judgement. She has all kinds of games on her computer and can and will install any toolbar or spyware that tells her it's helpful.

She had some kind of malware (I think?) on her computer which AdwCleaner, Malwarebytes and JRT seemed to remove, but her computer still won't connect to the internet. In device manager her TCP/IP Protocol Driver has a yellow icon and is giving code 24 and the same for the IP Network Address Translator.

I've tried and been unable to restore to an earlier date (probably due to the virus), scanned for hardware changes (no change), tried TCP/IP reset (didn't work), tried Winsock reset (didn't work).

Cannot do a System Restore earlier than initial infection.
Cannot turn on Windows Firewall - "Windows Firewall settings could not be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall Sharing (ICS) service? Clicked "Yes" then "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/ICS service".

What now? :(

ETA: running XP SP3

Download Windows Repair (All in One) from this site

Install the program then run it.

NOTE 1. In Windows Vista, 7 and 8 right click on the program, click "Run As Administrator".
NOTE 2. Disable your antivirus program before running Windows Repair.

Go to Step 2 and allow it to run CheckDisk by clicking on Do It button:

p22002979.gif

Once that is done then go to Step 3 and allow it to run System File Check by clicking on Do It button:

p22002980.gif

Go to Step 4 and under "System Restore" click on Create button:

p22002982.gif

Go to Start Repairs tab and click Start button.

Leave all checkmarks as they're.
NOTE for Windows 8 users. Reset Registry Permissions is NOT checked by design.

Click on Start button.
