Hello,

I had a topic/thread started earlier located at:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/487069/computer-shuts-down-during-av-scans/

Here is my original post:

I have a laptop that keeps shutting down unexpectedly during AVG (Free 2013), Malwarebytes (Pro) and Spybot scans. The scans will start and then without warning (and no bsod) the computer just shuts down (at about 26 - 28% through the scan according to AVG) . The computer seems to run fine otherwise. However, there have been a coupIe of times when it shut off and not during a scan. I am running XP Pro and also have Zone Alarm (free) installed.

I have replaced the fan less than a month ago and even more recently blown it out with compressed air.

I have run AVG and Dr.Web CureIt! in safe mode and get clean results, but when I return to normal mode and try to run them, the computer shuts down once again shortly into the scan.

I'm at a loss...maybe it's not a virus, trojan or malware (maybe some type of hardware issue?) but I don't always have the best of luck and I just figured it was some type of infection!!

Any assistance and/or advice would be highly appreciated.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After following the steps listed later in that topic, the computer worked fine for a few weeks. However, it is now acting up again. As an update, the laptop now shuts down very randomly (does not seem to matter if it is running a scan or not). I wasn't sure if there might be something else I could try or if it is just time to get a new laptop!!!

Thanks!

Try downloading Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.

Download SecurityCheck.exe from Here

. Run SecurityCheck and follow the instruction from inside the code box.
. When the scan is finished, a notepad will automatically open as check.txt
Please copy and paste the contents here on your next reply.

Download MiniToolBox and run the program. Select
List Last 10 Event Viewers, List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory Size then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

There is one pending sector count from your hard drive. Please monitor the health status of your drive and backup your data in case of a sudden failure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

C4 Reallocation Event Count: 100 (100) Data 0000000007

C5 Current Pending Sector Count: 100 (100) Data 0000000001

Try removing all protection softwares :

AVG http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities - Use free MSE http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201

Zone Alarm - use the Windows built-in firewall - In case there is a problem with uninstalling ZA in control panel use this this tool.

Spybot - Not recommended nowadays.

Update your IE browser - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=43

Did you happen to clean and reapply thermal paste from your heatsink and CPU? I suggest going to that route if the problem persist after the suggestions above did not make any improvement. There is no indication of thermal events under speccy since it is not most likely supported on your hardware setup. What IBM model is it?

jhayz,

Good evening! I did indeed clean and reapply thermal paste when I replaced the fan. The laptop is a T42 Thinkpad Type 2373. I guess that I will keep a lookout for a new HDD as well and see if I can pick one up at a good price. At the risk of sounding too newbie...is there a way to tell what type of hard drive (and caddy) I would need (PATA, SATA, IDE, etc). My thought would be to get a new HDD and place it in the spare drive bay and clone the current drive to the new one.

It is really kinda wierd though, ever since I posted on this thread, the laptop has been running fine with no issues!!! (Oops...I probably should not have said that!!!)

There may be IDE drives online available with much higher capacity and Yes you can use the image route using a 3rd party software like Macrium, Acronis (not free).

Well...I put a new hard drive in the laptop and it still turns off randomly. Any idea if this helps or points to anything else?

It seems there is still thermal event issue that is causing your shutdown problems. Try using this http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html to monitor the CPU and mobo temperature. Double check the replaced internal fan if its working properly also by turning it on while the laptop is partly disassembled. A bad or faulty fan would be the only thing that is left checking since it was probably replaced due to the same situation. How long does it randomly shutdown actually?

Actually, I replaced the fan because I was getting a "Fan Error" message on boot-up. Since I replaced the fan, I no longer receive the error message... but now I have the problem of the laptop shutting down without warning. Sometimes it will stay on for hours even days. Other times it shuts down every few minutes. However, it will always turn on immediately after it shuts down.

After some further research, I think I may have found my problem. There seems to be a fairly common issue with many of the T-series Thinkpad laptops involving the "southbridge" chip on the motherboard. It affects/controls the hdd, usb, display, and other ports, etc. Anyway when it begins to go bad or comes loose from it's solder joints (on the mobo), any number of things can be affected. So, I'm guessing that is my problem and start looking for a new laptop (probably time anyway)!!!

Thanks to all those who replied and have a great weekend!

Kindest regards!

Sorry to hear that news. There is one quick search for the T models which you might be referring to...?  http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_non-ThinkPad_hard_disks

Hi jhayz, This job you mention is a very specialized 1 if you want to insert a new HDD into your T42 (which I use also as my work-mule) because if you change the type = you will also have to change the bay's inside and still the T42 has ultra-slim architecture.  So I would recommend you to visit the special T42 forum on the web and read the advice about the options available and the connected pre-installation works you have to do.  Good success with the job. I still work with the original 40GB HDD and use USB connected extra HDD - and no problems at all.

Kindly Gamla.

Addicted to my portable T42 [xp] and a Desk PC with mobo Asus P5WD2 E PREMIUM [vista] - both operational in older OS but want to add both onto Linux.  All my application software works perfect in the XP environment.

My memory of the T42 is that the ATI Video chip is problematic. As I remember IBM changed the Heatsink assembly on the T43 so that it pressed down on the ATI chip for rigidity and cooling.

What used to kill many a T42 was not picking them up by both sides at the same time, Rather picking it up on one side which led to flexing the motherboard and eventually breaking the solder at the video chip.

This problem resulted in part due to the change to a low lead solder that is more brittle.

Good Luck

Roger

Hi Jacksons84

With regard to Hirens
We (the Forum) want you to know this...

Please be aware of the following:
Hiren's Boot CD is deemed by BleepingComputer.com management to be illegal due to copyright infringements (illegally distributed Microsoft files as well as a few questionable/illegal applications). Recommendation to use it or instruction on its use is not allowed on the BC forums.

I would ask that you do not recommend Hirens again.
Thank you

Roger
