applications won't start, can't log in

I came home today to find my system hanging and on restarting found that on trying to launch any application including Explorer I get error 0xc000007b. i restarted again and found my user profile present but am told that my password is incorrect. i have made no recent changes

strike that guys system restore worked for the first time ever
