Please help!  I felt compelled to be a “good Samaritan” today, and advise a well-known UK Political Party that all the roadside advertising boards they had put up over the weekend in my village had been stolen during the night! Therefore with good intentions, I visited their website and on clicking to get their local contact details received an alert from Trend Micro that it had detected and quarantined the MAL_Xin12 virus :ranting:

At the time I was remotely linked by my laptop (HP ProBook) to my desktop (Dell Vostro 460) as I’m not well so was working from my bed. An Adobe PDF exe then launched and knowing not to allow it to run I tried to shut this down using the X, but it simply wouldn’t work and just kept popping back up. So, i hauled myself out of bed and went to the Vostro and disconnected the remote link. I stopped the PDF process from Task Manager and shut the whole computer down then rebooted. On restarting my sound card was knocked out and then Windows Defender reported that it had detected and quarantined WIN32/Sirefef. There was no other suffix, just that.  I immediately telephoned the Political Party to advise them that their website was infecting their visitors and whilst doing this, Defender automatically removed the Sirefef. I then started scanning with SuperAntiSpyware and MBAM (which I use regularly) and googled both viruses as I was not familiar with either. I was horrified with what I learned. :woot:

SAS found nothing but some tracking cookies but MBAM detected Trojan.0Access and Trojan.FakeMS both of which were fixed upon reboot, as was my sound card. I have since run scans again with both and neither found anything malicious. At this stage I did a complete data backup to my external HD, then ran CCleaner on Windows, Applications and Registry. Things seem to be working OK but given that the computers in question are used for my business I would be really grateful if you could please tell me:

1) if my ProBook could also have been infected also as it was remotely connected to the Vostro at the time of the attack?

2) if I have any lasting infection on my Vostro from the following DDS and HijackThis logs. Incidentally, DDS ran fine, but I got the following message from Hijack This when running: "...system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any Hijacked domains are in this file, Hijack This may NOT be able to fix this..." I clicked through this message, and the check ran but of course, this has just worried me even more!!!

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Hello WSK

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with these just skip it and run the next one.

-Security Check-
  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
    • Save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
    • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
-AdwCleaner-
  • Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
    • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Click on Delete.
    • Confirm each time with Ok.
    • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
    • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
    • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
--RogueKiller--
  • Download & SAVE to your Desktop RogueKiller for 32bit or Roguekiller for 64bit
    • Quit all programs that you may have started.
    • Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
    • For Vista or Windows 7, right-click and select "Run as Administrator to start"
    • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
    • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
    • Then Click on "Scan" button
    • Wait until the Status box shows "Scan Finished"
    • click on "delete"
    • Wait until the Status box shows "Deleting Finished"
    • Click on "Report" and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
    • The log should be found in RKreport[1].txt on your Desktop
    • Exit/Close RogueKiller+

Hi Gringo

Firstly, my apologies for attaching the DDS.TXT file with my first post. I was following the directions on the user guide as I have not posted to BleepingComputer before and it advises to upload this! I have deleted it from within my Account. I have run the scans you requested and pasted them below. Seems that I am still infected with the ZeroAccess and have not been able to remove that completely with RogueKiller:

PROBLEM: When running this, Rogue Killer took me to the RIGZYRK blogspot where I was advised:

06/26/2012 update:

ZeroAccess in its latest variant is no longer a rootkit.

It only injects a Windows process (services.exe) with a dll stored in several locations.

Here's a video demonstrating how to get rid of it:

I tried watching this 11 minute long video and it was simply far too quick and too blurred for me to follow in any way! I couldn’t find a transcript of the directions on the website so I haven’t been able to follow any of the instructions so presume I still have some traces of this ZeroAccess infection yet to clear up. HELP!!!! :(

Hi Gringo, Some more information that may help....

I said in my original post that an Adobe PDF exe wanted to run when I was infected by the initial virus. This wasn't correct. It was actually Adobe Flash Player that was trying to run. I actually photographed the screen before I launched Task Manager and have just checked the photo so can see what the program was. Don't know if this is significant, but thought I should make sure my facts were straight!

Having read other posts regarding Zero Access, I downloaded and ran the ESET Online Scanner to see what that would turn up and thankfully it has come back with nothing found. So, I don't know if this is good news or if it just means that Zero Access has wormed its way further into my system and can't be found. If so, I'm guessing this means a manual removal process? Is this the only true way of making sure this infection has gone?

I am so worried about this and the impact it may have on not just my Vostro, but my other networked computers. Can this trojan actually spread via an ethernet network to my laptops? Will it compromise all my online banking? Is there really any way to totally remove it or is it going to need a total hard drive wipe and system rebuild? I can't think of anything I'd rather NOT do, but I need peace of mind! From what I have read online, this is a really nasty virus that keeps changing and digging deeper in the system and can cause not just havoc to performance, but actually open up my computer to be remotely controlled without my knowledge. I don't know how much of this is true or media scare mongering, but it sure has got my pulse rate through the roof!

Looking forward to some further advice once you have had a chance to review my Logs.

Hello WSK

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had

  • How is the computer doing now?

  • Gringo

I have not noticed my computer doing anything untoward since any of these attacks happened. It reboots fast and I have not noticed any odd behaviour using IE such as being taken to alterntive websites. All in all, my Vostro isn't behaving as though it has a problem and the only thing I did notice intially was that the Sound Card was disabled, but as reported previousy, this was fixed when MBAM took care of the Tojan.0Access and Trojan.FakeMS on reboot. To be honest, I am so paranoid of any infection mutatating / spreading that I haven't really used the Vostro since the infection, other than to research fixes and use this forum! I've left it off line for now with all protection SW disabled and I'm using my HP ProBook to type this instead. I ran MBAM and SAS on the ProBook last night and both found nothing other than the usual tracking cookies since my last clearout. Therefore, it doesn't seem that the ProBook was compromised despite being used to remotely control the Vostro at the time of the infection.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your time and support helping me sort this out  :thumbup2:

Hello WSK

At this time I would like you to run this script for me and it is a good time to check out the computer to see if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.

:Run CFScript:

Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:
ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
    • report from Combofix
      • let me know of any problems you may have had
        • How is the computer doing now after running the script?
      Gringo

I have tried opening all my MS Office software, plus others like GIMP, SketchUp, FreeFileSync, and all my on-demand security SW and, with the exception of SweetHome3D, everything opens instantly and correctly. SweetHome3D relies on Java7 and is saying "Unable to launch application". It has two error reports as follows:

Exception:

Hello WSK

At this time I would like you to run this script for me and it is a good time to check out the computer to see if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.

:Run CFScript:

Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:
ClearJavaCache::

Hi Gringo,

You have already asked me to run this particular script and I posted the results above at 9.37am along with an overview of my PC performance. Do you need me to run this again?

Hello

These logs are looking allot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore this is fine just move to the next item on the list.

You can remove these programs using add/remove or you can use the free uninstaller from Revo (Revo does allot better of a job)
  • Programs to remove

    • Adobe Reader X (10.1.6) MUI
      Java 7 Update 9

  • Please download and install Revo Uninstaller Free
  • Double click Revo Uninstaller to run it.
  • From the list of programs double click on The Program to remove
  • When prompted if you want to uninstall click Yes.
  • Be sure the Moderate option is selected then click Next.
  • The program will run, If prompted again click Yes
  • when the built-in uninstaller is finished click on Next.
  • Once the program has searched for leftovers click Next.
  • Check/tick the bolded items only on the list then click Delete
  • when prompted click on Yes and then on next.
  • put a check on any folders that are found and select delete
  • when prompted select yes then on next
  • Once done click Finish.
  • .

    Update Adobe reader
    • Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
      • If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

    Clean Out Temp Files
    • This small application you may want to keep and use once a week to keep the computer clean.

      Download CCleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/
      • Run the installer to install the application.
      • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
      • Run CCleaner. (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked).
      • Click Run Cleaner.
      • Close CCleaner.
: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

I see You have MBAM installed on the computer - that is great!! it is a very good program! I would like you to run a quick scan for me now
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

    Download HijackThis
    • Go Here to download HijackThis program
    • Save HijackThis to your desktop.
    • Right Click on Hijackthis and select "Run as Admin" (XP users just need to double click to run)
    • Click on "Do A system scan and save a logfile" (if you do not see "Do A system scan and save a logfile" then click on main menu)
    • copy and paste hijackthis report into the topic
    "information and logs"
    • In your next post I need the following
      • Log From MBAM
        • report from Hijackthis
          • let me know of any problems you may have had
            • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

That’s good news! I've asked some questions in Orange below which I'd be very grateful if you could answer along with the next step:

Revo Results

I took the opportunity to remove Blackberry Desktop and Go To Meeting (neither of which I use anymore) whilst deleting Adobe X and Java 9.

When I ran ESET prevously, it warned me that I had Vipre installed. I had previuosly tried loading it on my Vostro as I use this on my ProBook but it went all BSOD so I removed it. So, I was really surprised to see ESET say this. However, looking in ProgamData i can see that remnants of it remain. I'd like to remove this and thought I could do that with Revo, but it doesn't show in the icon list and of course it's not in the Add/Remove. Do I need the paid version of Revo to get rid of this?

I mentioned previously that eTeks Sweet Home 3D was the only bit of software that I couldn't launch when testing after the last post. It now seems to have been removed from everywhere but the Start Menu folder. Any idea how this happened as I didn't do it!? Can I just safely delete the folder from the Start Menu as, again, this doesn't show in Revo?

Adobe / Java Updates

I’ve uploaded the new version of Adobe but not Java as you didn’t mention that. Should I download Java now too?

Incidentally, when I tried to go to the Adobe download using the link you put into your last post, it just kept opening a 2nd page of this post in BleepingComputer. I eventually had to copy and paste the URL to get to the correct website. This isn’t a sign that something is still infecting me is it?

CCleaner

I use this all the time, along with Defraggler. They're great! This ran fine for both Cleaner and Registry.

Firewall / Virus Protection

I turned back on Windows Defender, Windows Firewall and Trend Micro before going online again. Trend was a bit iffy to begin with – taking itself on and off till it settled down. My subscription for Trend Micro Client/Server Security Agent has actually expired recently as it came free with my Vostro, so I haven’t been able to download the latest virus updates. Is this how I got infected despite not actually allowing the .exe to run from the moment Trend caught the initial infection with MAL_Xin12 or would it have gotten through anyhow? I’ve been procrastinating over what to go for on my Vostro now. I have used Norton and McAffee in the past and both have let me down / screwed me up badly. Trend has been OK and I have Vipre (now V.2013) on my Laptop with a lifetime subscription which has worked fine since 2011. What Virus / Firewall would you recommend I install now? Your advice would be very welcome Gringo.

HijackThis Log:

I ran this and copied the log with my first post. The same problem I had then I am having now. I get an alert on trying to run that my system has denied access to the Hosts File and that I will need to manually delete anything HijackThis reports as a problem. If I right click on the icon I do not get the option to run as Administrator now, although I did the first time I used it and got the same issue! Is this normal?
