So my friend has a problem with his computer.
This weekend the screen blacked out and when it came back all of his input text went invisible. For example all text in notepad is invisible until highlighted, URLs in Chrome are invisible until highlighted, drive and folder names are invisible until highlighted, all searches in the start menu are invisible and the search text as well.

We have tried some basic troubleshooting but the problem persists. Does anyone have any bright ideas?

Have you tried the basic Windows troubleshooter for the video function...in the Help menus?

Have you run the dx diagnostic tool?

Sounds like possibly failing video card, IMO.

Have you tried using the ClearType Tuner?

Thanks for the help.

After trying your tips and thinking for a while I found the exact problem.

For some reason under "Change window colors and metrics" the font color was changed to white.

Yes white on white would make things appear invisible.
