I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 which is about six years old. It overheated and powered off last night (something it does with frequency). This morning when I turned it on I had some start-up options, and selected "start normally" which I always do. It brought me to the log-in screen, I put in my password, and it seems to log in, but instead of being able to view my desktop, it is just a black screen. There's nothing to click, and the only thing I can do is let it power off. What happened? How can I fix this/prevent from happening again?

How have you determined that this is a overheat issue?

If the laptop is overheating I would suggest using canned air to blow out the dust inside, products like the ones listed here.

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

If so, does this problem persist?

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.
