My laptop was infected with rootkit.boot.pihar.c.  The system was completely unbootable (flashing cursor after BIOS loaded), nor could I perform a system restore or boot to safe mode.  Long story short, I backed up the partition using Acronis boot disk, reformatted, and restored the partition from the backup.  I then was able to boot the system once again and run some scans.  Norton found it first, followed by malwarebytes which found a few more pieces.  I ran other numerous scans both online and via bootable cd (trend micro, kaspersky, etc.) and all have now come up clean.  But I would like to ensure that all reminants of this (and any other "bad guys") are now removed entirely, so TIA for any assistance you can provide.

Combofix appeared to hang at the log creation screen... here is what I gleaned from the log. Didn't want to rerun it without first passing this along.  Let me know if I should rerun it.

Sorry, forgot to comment as requested.  The system is not showing any "obvious" signs/issues of infection, or any serious "issues" per se.  However, want to make a new backup image of this system and so trying to ensure it is cleaned up properly before doing so.

Your logs are clean.

Suggest you do this final check before creating a image.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the esetOnline.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetSmartInstall.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check esetAcceptTerms.png
  • Click the esetStart.png button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check esetScanArchives.png
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push esetListThreats.png
  • Push esetExport.png, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the esetBack.png button.
  • Push the esetFinish.png button.
  • ===
    When all is well:

    Time for some housekeeping
    • The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:
    • ComboFix /Uninstall
    ===

    To remove AdwCleaner.

Please double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    Click on Uninstall.
    Confirm with Yes.

If you decide to keep the AdwCleaner tool make sure to delete your version and download the latest before running it.

Delete the other tools we used.
You can Keep the DDS tool as most forum will ask to see a log before suggesting a fix.

    Surf Safely, and Think Prevention!

Nasdaq,

The Eset scan reported that no threats were found.  I also could not see where it offered a chance to save a log file (maybe because nothing was found???) so none is provided.

I have performed the cleanup routines you suggested.  So at this point, I am assuming we are done?  If so, thank you VERY much for your assistance.

Best Regards,

J
