Hi, great and mysterious wizards of BC.

My computer is running fine once it boots up, but I'm wondering if something is getting ready to go toes up. It takes the longest time to go from pressing the power button to being fully booted into Windows XP SP 3.

Here's the timeline:

0:00   Press power button, blinking cursor appears in upper left corner

0:30   Motherboard splash screen appears

3:45   Windows splash screen appears

6:45   Windows Welcome screen appears

7:05   Desktop image (no icons) loads

9:05   System ready to use

When I ask for the motherboard to display the BIOS process, it zips through everything but hangs up on detecting SATA 1 (which is a 750 gig HDD), then zips through the rest. I have no explanation for why it's suddenly decided to take so darn long to run through POST, BIOS and starting up Windows.

The only change to hardware that's been done in at least a year was installing a new power supply about a month ago; that's another thing, this system seems to eat power supplies. It's the second one I've put in it since I built it in 2011.

My system:

Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. M4A79XTD EVO Rev X.0X

Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 2102 06/17/2010

Processor: 3.40 gigahertz AMD Phenom II X4 965

512 kilobyte primary memory cache
2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache
6144 kilobyte tertiary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (4 total)
Not hyper-threaded

OS: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)

RAM: 3328 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Slot 'DIMM0' has 4096 MB (serial number SerNum00)
Slot 'DIMM1' has 4096 MB (serial number SerNum01)
Slot 'DIMM2' is Empty
Slot 'DIMM3' is Empty

HDD:  Seagate ST3750528AS 750 gig (partitioned into C:/ and E:/)

          Seagate ST3120022A 120 gig (D:/)

Hi wobblerworri :)

Let me see if I can help you.

Try downloading Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.

Download MiniToolBox and run the program. Select
List Last 10 Event Viewers, List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory Size then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

Is this a work computer? Speccy shows that you have an 8 gig of RAM sticks inserted on slots but running only on 32 bit  of Windows XP which would only recognize barely the 4 gig of sticks. It would be beneficial to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit so that your installed RAM sticks would all be recognize especially when using Corel Draw. It seems also your antivirus (F secure - corporate version?) caught an infection on System Volume Information. A good reference to your problem is related here.

No, it's a home computer. Can't afford to upgrade to Win 7, and I already have 64 bit Win 7 on a laptop, which won't update to SP 1 so I'm leery of doing that. Also don't want to reinstall all my programs right now.

That's not my issue, though. My issue is that it takes 30 seconds for my system to get through POST, then it takes almost 4 minutes for it to load BIOS; it's taking most of that time finding and identifying SATA 1. Then Windows itself takes about 5 minutes to load.

0:00 Press power button, blinking cursor appears in upper left corner

0:30 Motherboard splash screen appears

3:45 Windows splash screen appears

6:45 Windows Welcome screen appears

7:05 Desktop image (no icons) loads

9:05 System ready to use

Once it's loaded it's stable as a rock -- it rarely locks up. I'm wondering if the motherboard is getting ready to fail or if it's SATA 1 (which is partitioned into my C: drive and my E: drive) is getting wonky.

I'm not concerned with doing anything to the OS beyond maybe running a repair on it; besides, most of my programs are 32 bit. When support for XP ends, then I'll upgrade to Win 7, but not before.

So. Why is my system taking so long to POST and run BIOS?

Sorry for not noticing your reply... The 64 bit system is backward compatible to 32 bit programs. I would also remove the 4 gig stick as it is useless for this time. Let us see if disabling some startup items would resolve your problem.
