My wife was using the computer on-line and received a phone call from a "Microsoft windows expert" about a problem on the computer - the well known scam. She argued with the caller a while then put down the phone on him.

Now the computer fails to boot into Windows - in Safe mode it hangs when / after loading apgcpq.sys.

I thought this scam worked by getting the user to allow the scammer access to the PC. I have not heard of the scammer being able to harm the PC in this way. My searches have not found anything about this kind of scam attack.

My question is - Is this a known form of attack and what is the most likely malware to be responsible?

I have restored my C:drive from a recent backup and will now run spybot, malwarebytes and AVG scan to try and clear out any malware.

Thanks for any help, John
