I did a factory restore on my hp desktop computer.  Now I can't reinstall the wireless adapter because I don't have service pack 3.  Only have service pack 1.  How can I get service pack 3 back so that I can use my wireless adapter again?  Or do I have to ditch the desktop? Thanks.

HI, Try this

You can Download the XP SP2 from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28

Install it.

Then download the XP SP3 from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

Install it

Then Windows update will work and you should download all the Security fixes. You should also be able to install the Wireless.

Good Luck

Roger

Use a thumb drive or burn it to DVD from a friends computer? How are you online responding here now?

You are online now with a computer. The two files are standalone installers. You can download them anywhere and put them on a CD or DVD or USB Flash drive and install them from there in the offline computer. They do not need the computer to be connected to the internet.

I hope that clarifies it for You?

Good Luck

Roger

You do not need SP2 if SP1 is already installed. You can go directly from SP1->SP3.

Please elaborate...exactly what steps are you taking...what error messages do you receive, etc.?

Many of us have no problem burning it to CD.

When I click on the file to copy it says insert a cd into the disk drive.  Then I get a message that this file cannot be copied because it is a read only?

You don't "copy" the file...you follow the same procedures that would be used to burn any other file, using appropriate burn software.  What software is installed which is used by you to burn CDs or DVDs?

I think you may need a third party burning software to do that as media player is more a music or media oriented thing.

Try downloading this neat little freeware burning program InfraRecorder.

http://infrarecorder.org/

Once installed and opened choose "Data disk".

If the disk it burns doesn't work, you can try "Write Image"

Nev.

Why all the fuss, I already have Windows 8. Three windows at the front, and five at the back since I bought the house.

One other stray thought.

1. It does have to be a new unused CD Blank. Such as CD-R or CD-RW

2. The drive has to be able to burn CDs.
