Hello - When I plugged in the usb lead from my camera to upload photos, the laptop has stopped recognising that the camera is attached i.e. in my computer the camera is not showing. Also laptop is not recognising SD card when inserted direct.

When windows (Windows 7) opens a grey message box pops up and says “error has occurred”. Google chrome has stopped working.

I also cannot get into the C drive. When I double click it says “access denied”. As there is a problem with the C drive I can’t save anything to the PC.

I cannot access the internet unless the laptop is in safe mode.

When opening the laptop in safe mode I can access the C drive and everything seems to work as per normal (but I cannot open things like Word which I assume is normal in safe mode). In safe mode I can pick up the photos and take them onto a memory stick, but when the windows starts normally it won’t let me do this…it seems that nothing on the C drive can be accessed.

I have run Kaspersky security which didn’t find a virus, also Avast (free version) which didn’t find anything. Malawarebytes came back with no infections as did TDSSKiller.

Here is the dds.txt log (this had to be run in safe mode) with attach.txt attached - I look forward to any help or advice you can offer...

Greetings and :welcome: to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum.

My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.

If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that. :thumbup2:

===================================================

Ground Rules:
  • First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. :)
  • Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance.
  • Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence.
  • Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me about it.
  • When you post your reply, use the Replytopic.jpg button instead.
  • In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the Followtopic.jpg button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.
  • If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.
  • When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.
  • I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.
  • Now let's get started :thumbup2:
===================================================

Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.

Thank you for your patience thus far. Please allow me some time to review the information you have provided and I will reply as soon as possible.
Gary

If I do not reply within 24 hours please send me a Personal Message.

Greetings Rich,

My pleasure to help. No problem with you not knowing much about computers. The instructions should be clear enough to follow but if you have any questions or are confused by my posts please don't hesitate to let me know.

First we will see if Windows can heal itself. If not, we have lots of other options.

Please do this.

===================================================

Running Startup Repair

--------------------
  • Reboot your computer and gently tap F8 to enter the Advanced Boot Options menu
  • Highlight Repair Your Computer and press Enter
  • Click Next
  • Enter the password information if necessary then click OK
  • Click Startup Repair and allow the process to complete
  • Restart the computer if required
  • Attempt to boot your computer into Normal Mode
===================================================

Things I would like to see in your next reply. Please be sure to copy and paste any requested log information unless you are asked to attach it. :thumbsup2:
  • Does your computer boot into Normal Mode?

Gary

Hi Gary - I have ran the startup repair and it has not made any difference - the computer does boot into normal mode only as said when in normal mode I cannot access the c drive, load Google chrome, internet explorer, view the C drive etc. I can do all of this in safe mode.

What should I try next?

Thanks

Gary - Internet explorer stopped working in normal mode around a week ago either 9/10 April, which seemed to happen after I tried to remove Kaspersky security. It would not complete the removal as said it could not access the file in the C drive. I was planning on taking Kaspersky off to try AVG.

The problems around the error message saying "error occured" popping up when windows starts began around week commencing 25 March. This also coincided with a message saying Google Chrome could not be accessed. As I have not tried to upload photos for a few months I'm not sure when the access to the C drive was denied but I assume the same time as this "error" happened.

As said everything working OK in safe mode so I assume the hardware is OK.

Thanks

Rich

Hi Rich,

Thank you for the detailed description. We are first going to see if there is an available Restore Point that will work for us.

Please do this.

===================================================

Selecting Previous System Restore Point in Windows 7 Safe Mode

--------------------
  • Restart your computer
  • When the machine first starts gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Advanced Boot Options menu
  • Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys
  • Click on Start, Control Panel, then System
  • Click on System Protection in the left-hand task list
  • Click on the System Restore button, then click Next
  • Put a check mark in Show more restore points
  • If available, select a Restore Point prior to March 25th, or if unavailable, a Restore Point prior to April 9th
  • Click Next, then Finish
  • If System Restore was an option, please reboot into Normal Mode and attempt to access your C: drive
===================================================

Things I would like to see in your next reply. Please be sure to copy and paste any requested log information unless you are asked to attach it. :thumbsup2:
  • Results?

Hi the earliest restore point was a system restore on 4 April...I done this but when windows loads in normal mode it says...system restore did not complete successfully. Your computers system files and settings were not changed. Details: system restore failed while deleting the following file/directory. Path: c:\Windows\Installer\$PatchCache$\Managed\68AB67CA7DA7FFFFB744AA0000000

I have tried internet explorer and Google chrome which are now both working...
However still says c drive not accessible as access is denied.

Thanks
Rich

Hi Rich,

I thought it was a longshot but we needed to at least try.

Please run this program for me.

===================================================

GrantPerms by Farbar

--------------------
  • Download Grantperms64 (64 bit systems) and save it to your desktop
  • Unzip the file and launch the program
  • Copy and paste the following in the edit box:

C:\\

  • Click List Permissions and copy/paste the results of the Perms.txt document.
  • A copy of Perms.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Things I would like to see in your next reply. Please be sure to copy and paste any requested log information unless you are asked to attach it. :thumbsup2:
