Vista Home Premium (x64) SP 2
Firefox 20

Hi. I'm using Trusteer Rapport and it has reported some problems over the past week. It activated anti-keylogging three times when I logged into my banking and credit card websites, It also blocked a screen capture when I logged into Amazon. I have twice lost access to my keyboard and mouse.

Both Virgin Media anti-virus and Spybot S&D report no problems. The first couple of times I tried running Malwarebytes it stopped responding after 30 seconds and started up again around 2 minutes later. It's now working ok and not reporting any problems.

Any help is gratefully appreciated. Here's the DDS report -

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===
Please download ComboFix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this web page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Link 1
Link 2

IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

How to : Disable Anti-virus and Firewall...
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I ran ComboFix as directed. It said it was deleting three files - C:install.exe, C:winint.ini, and one other I couldn't read before it rebooted my computer. I logged in and literally hundreds of blue screen ComboFix windows began rapidly opening and closing.

I can't access anything else. I'm using a computer in my local library as I have completely lost control of my machine. I tried switching it off at the wall but the same problem persists when I log in.

Help!

Do you have the Vista Installation disk or did you create a startup disk the first time you used the new computer.

Place either disk in the CD drive and start the system.
What options do you have when the computer start?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I wasn't able to get near a computer over the weekend.

I created a start up disk. I'll use it this afternoon and get back to you either later today or tomorrow morning.

Thanks.

I'm not getting any options - it's going straight through to Windows. Does this mean I'm not going to be able to do a factory reset?  There's still hundreds of ComboFix windows opening and closing.

Lets check further on this infection.

Please download RogueKiller© by Tigzy from one of the links below and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 Bleepingcomputer
Link 2 RogueKiller (par Tigzy)

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.
For Vista or Windows 7, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Click Scan to scan the system.
When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop, DO NOT ATTACH THE LOG.

1) The start-up disk is clicking and whirring when the machine is switched on but there’s no video signal until Windows starts loading. I’ve used it in the past so I’m wondering if it’s a hardware problem.
2) I was able to get into my administrator account and found ComboFix hanging. It made a report and rebooted. When I used my normal account the Combofix windows had disappeared so it probably explains that problem.

It had made the following deletions-

c:\install.exe
c:\windows\SysWow64\system
c:\windows\wininit.ini

I ran it again from the admin account and it deleted - c:\windows\isRS-000.tmp

I compared the two reports and that was the one difference so I’m only posting the original for clarity.

3) I've tested starting the logins to my sensitive websites and the keylogging/screen capture blocking is still being activated.

4) This post also contains the RogueKiller, AdwCleaner and Security Check reports.

Quoted from the page.
"In light of the recent events surrounding Java, users must seriously consider their use of Java. Do they really need it? If yes, make sure that users follow the steps we recommended and get the security update directly from the official oracle website." at:

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the esetOnline.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetSmartInstall.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check esetAcceptTerms.png
  • Click the esetStart.png button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check esetScanArchives.png
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push esetListThreats.png
  • Push esetExport.png, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the esetBack.png button.
  • Push the esetFinish.png button.
  • If the problem persists I would reinstall the Keylogger program.

    Keep me posted.

Sorry for the long delay nasdaq. Well we found something thanks to a 11 hour ESET scan:

C:\Users\Steve\Downloads\winamp563_full_emusic-7plus_all.exe    Win32/OpenCandy application    cleaned by deleting - quarantined

I then found that I'd been incredibly stupid and forgotten to turn my firewall back on after my last lot of tests! I'm going to run them all again and see if anything else comes up. Thanks for your continued help.

Except your time of course :)

Other than ESET I've run all the tests again but the keylogger is still there. I'm running ESET later; if there's no joy then I'm going to do a factory reset.
