So I restarted my windows xp machine today and noticed google chrome isn't loading any website. I thought it was a bad extension so i went to the tools->extensions but even that page did the same thing. So I reinstalled chrome and deleted everything i could find that was related to chrome even in the app data folders. Restarted computer and reinstalled chrome same thing. Turned off all firewalls and antivirus. Still does the same thing. Seeing a page load for a split second makes me think some virus or something has infected my computer. After some research I found this post http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/SBenHck7nU4 Same problem as me and the guy saids it turned out to be Rootkit-gen[RTK]. Now doing some research on that rootkit some of the files that are associated with that virus i can't find on that machine. So it makes me think it might some other virus. Any help would be appreciated. I can post hijackthis logs and combofix logs if needed.

P.S. I have tried all the stuff posted here https://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95669 tried about:conflicts, tried creating a new account in chrome and that still brings up the aw snap page. Everything goes to aw snap even the settings and all those options.

P.S.S. The -no sandbox fix does not work when put in the target line of the .exe. I tried many variations and have use target line commands before in other programs so I am pretty sure I was doing it right. One interesting thing is I can drag a .txt file onto the chrome.exe file on the desktop and it will render it.

I don't see any rootkit activity.

p22002970.gif You're not running any AV program.

Install ONE of these:

- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

- free Microsoft Security Essentials: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials
Note for Windows 8 users: Microsoft Security Essentials comes preinstalled and renamed as Windows Defender.
You can keep it or you have to disable it before installing another AV program.  How to...

- free Comodo Antivirus: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/antivirus.php

Update, run full scan, report on any findings.

p22002970.gif Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

p22002970.gif Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

=============================================================================

p22002970.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

=======================================

p22002970.gif Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

After trying all the techie solutions and searching for malware, I took the easy way out.  I loaded Google Chrome Canary - and all is well.  Regular Chrome will not work, but all the links and such available there comes up on Canary.

I stiil get nothing but "aw snap" when I try to load Chrome but I no longer care. Canary has developmental bells and whistles that can be tried but all I want is a Chrome that works on regular things and Canary doies that as well.

I downloaded avast and a ran that. It found 4 threats but i know they are false positives and they are files i have been running for years but avast till "moved them to chest". Then the pc rebooted and avast did another scan before windows loaded and found some more false positives of old files. All these files haven't been run for a long if at all. Heres the results from the other test

p22002970.gif Update Adobe Flash Player: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Make sure you UN-check Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus

NOTE 1: Beginning with Adobe Flash Version 11.3, the universal installer includes the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Flash Player.
NOTE 2: While installing make sure you UN-check any extra garbage which wants to install alongside.

p22002970.gif Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

p22002970.gif 1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it.

  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista and 7 users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Do NOT post JavaRa log.

You should be good to go.
