After a computer crash my print spooler no longer works.

When I attempt to start it manually, I receive the error message (Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

I am unable to reinstall my printer or print anything.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks

Which operating system you use ?

The very first step you should do is a check disk scan and system file check to fix damaged OS files.

To run check disk enter "CHKDSK C: /R" in command prompt. You will be prompted to run the check during the next boot so restart the system and let check disk finish the scan.

After that open command prompt again and enter "SFC /SCANNOW" to initialize a system file check. You may be required to insert the installation CD if you are running XP.

If the above step didn't help you we may need to analyze your OS components and running services using third party  tools.

I will try your suggestion when I get back to my system and let you know.

Thanks for the response,

Also try unplugging the printer from your computer if it's usb. Restart the computer, and then plug the printer back into your computer.

See what happens. I had this issue with trying to print off a .pdf file. It would crash the print spooler service and the above trick would fix it.

I have tried all of the above with no luck.

When I attempt to start the print spooler manually, I receive the error message (Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

I am still unable to install a printer.

Anyone have any other ideas.

Hi

Please perform the following steps.

1) Uninstall all your Printer drivers using add\remove programs.

2) Run MS Fixit for print spooler. You can download it from http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9662904

Run the tool and make sure to select "Reset print spooler" tick box selected. Restart the system and check status of spooler.

Let me know the results.

if you also performed the chkdsk  please go to 'Services' and make sure Print Spooler is on 'Started' and 'Automatic' then do the same with 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

save and  reboot.

P.S İf problem occured after an Windows Update that may have caused the crash and the Print Spooler problem.Uninstalling said update may solve the problem. Also see M/soft's 'Resolution' here    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839174
