Has anyone ever had any experience in setting up, configuring an using PHP workers?

I am writing my own API and rather than having clients keep polling to see if an action is completed it would be nicer for me to send them a notification of the event. Much like PayPal sends their IPN's.

Am I making this harder/more complicated than it needs to be? I am open to any other suggestions!
