Hi,

I received excellent help from this website a while back when my computer was infected, so I hope that you can help me again.

My computer has been acting strangely lately.  Sometimes it will crash with a quick blue screen saying Windows has encountered an unexpected error, and then quickly shuts itself off.

Windows Media Player is also doing something strange.  It repeatedly displays the message "retrieving media info for an unknown album."  Also, when I actually try to rip a disk into the library, it doesn't find the information online for an album like it's supposed to.

This has been going on for at least several weeks, but yesterday I went online to try and fix this problem, and I came up with this:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-pictures/wmp12-is-constantly-retrieving-media-info-for-an/70662549-903d-48de-a999-cc0932e2b0af

The answer given for the problem was to go to the directory %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player and delete all of the files there (but none of the sub-folders).  There were several .wmdb files.  I tried to delete them all, but one would not delete: the system told me that another process had access to the file.  I tried rebooting without starting up any programs, but again, I was told that a process had access.  When I opened Windows Media Player, the problem was not fixed.

After this, I noticed that I could no longer run Java applets in my browsers (IE and Chrome).  I just get a blank white screen where the applet normally loads and runs.  Eventually an error message usually appear.  The one on Chrome directed me to download the latest Java, which I did.  It did not help the problem.

I am not 100% sure, but I think the Java problem began after I deleted the files in that folder.  I was successfully running applets 2 days ago, and I think I was even running one earlier in the day yesterday.

I frequently run Malwarebytes scans, and while sometimes bad files show up, they usually clean up and do not appear to repeatedly reinstall themselves.  Yesterday, I ran it several times, including in safe mode, but after the first scan (and several computer restarts), nothing is showing up.

So those are the problems I am having right now--what should I do?

Thanks in advance for your help!  I really do appreciate it.

Hi, I don't know if this will help with the Media player problem but it might be worth a try?

Let's completely remove Java and see.

Run JavaRa
  • Please download JavaRa and unzip it in a folder on your desktop.
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • Click on Settings and Place a checkmark beside Create a log file. Click on Back.
  • Click on Update JavaRa Definitions. Click on download. When this is done click on Back.
  • Choose Remove JRE, since you already uninstalled Java, please click on Next.
  • Now click on Perform Removal Routine to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • When that's succesfully done, please click OK to close the message.
  • Click on Next. Since you already downloaded the latest version of Java, please click on Next.
  • Now click on Close this wizard and click Finish.
  • From the main menu please choose Additional Tasks
  • Place a checkmark beside Remove Outdated JRE Firefox Extentions and click Run. Mozilla Firefox should be closed before running this task.
  • When that's succesfully done you will see a message at the top saying: "Selected tasks completed successfully".
  • A log file should be created in the same directory as JavaRa.
  • Please post the log in your next reply.
  • Close JavaRa by clicking the red cross button.

Reboot and check WMP

The computer is running very slow now when I try to open programs.  WMP caused a crash the last few times I ran it; it opened after a very long time, and then after I tried to do something, it froze up and gave me a blue screen saying that "a problem has been detected and Widnows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer".

This is the error message that I got upon restarting the computer:

Problem signature:

Problem Event Name: BlueScreen

OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48

Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:

BCCode: a

BCP1: 00000074

BCP2: 00000002

BCP3: 00000001

BCP4: 82AA98C4

OS Version: 6_1_7600

Service Pack: 0_0

Product: 256_1

Files that help describe the problem:

C:\Windows\Minidump\041913-80090-01.dmp

C:\Users\Bruce\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-97266-0.sysdata.xml

Running Java applets is still impossible when I try to do so.

After a few more tries, Windows Media is up and running, and it is currently not giving that error message I was getting before.  However, Java applets still aren't running and I still can't open up Adobe Acrobat reader.

I reinstalled both programs, but still, Java applets do not run and Adobe Acrobat Reader will not open.

Lets try one more thing, SFC
Please run SFC (System File Checker)

Use Option Two.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by option 2.  I downloaded and ran the program, and it seemed to perform th "Scan Registry" function.

It found 8 system related errors, 95 Com and ActiveX errors, 19 user related errors, and 34 startup and unisall errors.

I also received an alert saying that "Advanced System Protector has detected 1 items."

When I clicked to fix these issues, it offered to fix 15 of the issues for free, but would not fix any more without me purchasing their service.  How should I proceed?
