  • Please download AutoRuns and save it to your desktop
  • Double click the AutoRuns.zip folder
  • Double click autoruns.exe (not autorunsc.exe), select Run, then Run again and allow the information to populate
  • Select File, Save, Desktop (in the left hand pane), then Save filename as Autoruns.txt and change Save as type to  Text(*.txt).
  • Double click on the text file, copy and paste the contents in your reply

  • Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop
  • Please close any Firefox browsers you may have open
  • Double click the MiniToolBox.jpg icon to launch the program
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • List last 10 Event Viewer log
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Devices
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

  • Click Go and once the scan is completed a Result.txt Notepad document will open on your desktop
  • Please copy and paste the contents in your reply

Launch Autoruns and uncheck these two entries

"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" "" "" "" "01/04/2013 10:12 AM"
+ "DISCover" "DISCover Drop & Play System Executable" "Digital Interactive Systems Corporation" "c:\program files\disc\discover.exe" "11/11/2005 2:11 PM"
+ "DiscUpdateManager" "DISCover Update Manager" "Digital Interactive Systems Corporation, Inc." "c:\program files\disc\discupdatemgr.exe" "11/11/2005 2:09 PM"

Restart the PC and see if that helps.

Hi narenxp,

Thanks once again for the information..OK, I followed the steps you provided for me above and I didn't have the pop up messsage appear on the restart..So, I'm hoping it worked..Thanks again.

Hey narenxp,

If it's not too much of a bother, I was hoping I could ask you one more question with regards to my computer..I don't know how to explain it but I will try my best..Lately, I've been having issues where if I play any music/movie files the sound starts to skip/stutter..I've also noticed that my mouse pointer lags/stutters on the screen..Do you have any idea what could be causing this issue?..If you could let me know that would be greatly appreciated..Thanks once again for everything and have a great day.

Hi narenxp,

Thanks again for getting back to me with the information..It's greatly appreciated..Ok, I followed your instructions and so far so good..It seems like it fixed the problem with the skipping/stuttering in the audio and video playback..Also, I've also noticed that there is no more lagging/stuttering of the mouse pointer on the screen.

Just curious, do I need to restore any of the settings back to normal?..Also, after I start up my computer I get this pop up with a message that says:

You Have used the system configuration utility to make changes to the way windows starts.

The system configuration utility is currently in Diagnostic or selective startup mode, causing

this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.

Choose the Normal Startiup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the

changes you made using the system configuration utility.

What do I do about the pop up?..If you could please get back to me and let me know..That would be greatly appreciated..Thanks once again for your time and patience..Have a great day.

Ignore the popup for now.You need to find the startup entries that are the actual cause.

Go here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us

The steps given there should work for windows xp too

Expand How to determine what is causing the problem by performing a clean boot

Follow the steps to find the exact entry that is causing startup slowness

Let me know the entry

Hi narenxp,

Thanks for getting back to me once again..It's greatly appreciated..Ok, I clicked on the link that you provided and proceeded with the instructions..Unfortunately, I don't quite understand step 4. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list?..I'm not sure what I'm suppose to do?..I apologize for complicating matters and making things more difficult for you..If you could get back to me at your earliest convenience..That would be greatly appreciated..Thanks again for all your time and patience..Have a great day.

The idea is simple. You need to checkmark a few startup entries .Restart the PC and if you do not have issues we could make sure that those entries are harmless and do the same for  left out entries.

Go here and follow the STEP 2 Determine What is Causing the Problem. The instructions are same for windows XP too.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/179159-troubleshoot-application-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html

This will help us find the entries that are causing the lagging and stuttering.

Hi narenxp,

I apologize for the late response..Ok, I tried following the instructions from the link which you provided..However, it didn't seem like I was experiencing any lag/stuttering?..I don't know if this makes any sense but I will do my best in explaining myself..When we first started with the msconfig setup, I remember unchecking everything except Load System Services and Use Original Boot.INI..Then I clicked the services tab and checked Hide All Microsoft Services..After I restart my computer, it seems like the computer is working fine..No lag/stuttering with the audio/video or mouse.

Now, each time I restart my computer I get the System Configuration Utility pop up which I mentioned to you earlier..However, now when the pop up appears..The Load Startup Items is automatically checked and I notice that the lagging/stuttering is present..Do you think it might be an entry in the Startup Tab of the System Configuration Utility which is causing the problem?..I noticed in the link which you provided above, that it mentions in step 6 to follow the same instructions but this time it asks to go into the Startup Tab instead of the Services Tab..I didn't go that far but now I'm thinking that maybe it could be an entry in Startup that is causing the lagging/stuttering?..What do you think?..Again, if you could get back to me at your earliest convenience that would be greatly appreciated..Thanks again for all your time and patience..Have a great day.

P.S I apologize if my reply didn't make any sense..It's about 4:25am here and I'm afraid my brain is still half asleep..lol.

Temporarily you should ignore this System Configuration Utility pop up and concentrate on finding the bad entry,

that it mentions in step 6 to follow the same instructions but this time it asks to go into the Startup Tab instead of the Services Tab..I didn't go that far but now I'm thinking that maybe it could be an entry in Startup that is causing the lagging/stuttering?.

Please follow the instructions. After services tab you need to do the same for startup tab too

Go to services tab.Checkmark Hide all microsoft services.Make sure to enable all services(place a tick near the entry)

Go to startup tab and uncheck all the entries.

Restart the PC.If you are not getting any lags, bad entry may be with the startup  tab and not the services tab
