After those I ran a new KIS2010 scan and the Trojan.JS.REdirector.XA had gone, but the Java CVE2013-1493 was still found (though fewer than before)

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Be careful not to install malware posing as Java update!
Important read this blog.

Quoted from the page.
"In light of the recent events surrounding Java, users must seriously consider their use of Java. Do they really need it? If yes, make sure that users follow the steps we recommended and get the security update directly from the official oracle website." at:

How to disable Java in your browsers

You can manually check your present version and update as recommended.

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java™ 6 Update 33

Java 7 update 10 introduced important new security controls
You can read about it here.

Note
Java security update installs Ask Toolbar by default -- a single click in a multi-step installer.
I suggest that your un-check the box "Install the Ask Toolbar" before proceeding.
===

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

ClearJavaCache::

Save this as CFScript.txt on your desktop.

CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Keep me posted.

p.s.
If you still get an error from KIS2010 can you see what file(s) is being identified?

Apologies for the delay in replying.

Not sure if I've run things out of order :

1. uninstalled Java 6 ok

2. ran Combofix (log below) with ClearJavaCache  (poss should have run this after the reinstall)

During the run, Combofix reported that a later version was available so I updated it  (not sure if that might have affected the ClearJavaCache)

3. installed Java 7 (32 bit & 64 bit) - looked ok but didn't see any screen mentioning Ask Toolbar (and can't see it in the Win Control Panel/Programs and Features after).

One question - Java's asking about whether to enable the SSV Helper plug-in - what would you recommend?

Reran the KIS2010 full scan but I'm finding the results confusing.

During the scan, I saw a couple of pop-ups saying "Threats Detected", but the report at the end says "No Threats Detected".

Then ran partial scans on the folders which had the hits, and they're clean.

Even so, the main page still says "Threats have been detected" - this could be a glitch in KIS, so would you think it's safe

to click the "Fix it now" button in the hope that it'll clear it?

One more question : this folder is still in place after the uninstall / reinstall :

     C:\Users\Puddy\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0

Should I delete this?

One question - Java's asking about whether to enable the SSV Helper plug-in - what would you recommend?

Probably not required in your case. Read this topic and decide.

C:\Users\Puddy\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0

I do not think you need it. Delete it and keep it in your recycle bin. If required you can restore it.
Flush it in a week or two.

I deleted the cache\6.0 folder and no problems so far.

After a while, KIS seemed to reset its protection status to 'no threats detected'.

Since then I've rerun KIS scans and rebooted a few times and all looks good.

Many thanks for your help, nasdaq

Glad we could help.

If all is well:

Time for some housekeeping
  • The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
  • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:
  • ComboFix /Uninstall
===

To remove AdwCleaner.

Please double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Uninstall.
Confirm with Yes.

If you decide to keep the AdwCleaner tool make sure to delete your version and download the latest before running it.

Delete the other tools we used.
You can Keep the DDS tool as most forum will ask to see a log before suggesting a fix.
