Hi,

We think we had a virus on our computer recently which resulted in us being unable to run MS Essentials. We get the message "This program is blocked by group policy" when we try. My partner got around this by running it in safe mode and we believe we have removed the virus but we are still getting the above message when we try and run MS Essentials.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks

A

Did you try to reinstall MSE to start with?

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, we tried to uninstall it so we could reinstall it but it wouldn't let us and we got the message "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials. Please contact your system administrator."

We also tried googling the "group policy" message but there are different suggestions to what is causing it and how to resolve it so don't know where to go from here.

See if you can run it from safe mode.

I ran it in safe mode and it didn't detect any malware. Came up 0 for everything. Tried to find the log in the C drive, got as far as the Malwarebytes anti-malware folder but there was no logs folder in there. Couldn't see the log-date.txt file anywhere.

You're infected with ZeroAccess rootkit.

It'll require elevated help.

Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
