So, I followed all the directions to the point of "safe mode".  The IBM Thinkpad T43 refuses to boot into safe mode.  It displays the blue screen of death reading that a problem has been detected.  Of course, it does not stay on long enough for me to read.

The computer runs Windows XP SP3.  It has AVG antivirus on it, but obviously something went wrong.  My friend asked me to look at it after getting the warning about the child porn and the FBI, and the request for "payment of the fine".

We all laughed because we are all military, so we know if the FBI found anything like that, it wouldn't send a message, it would arrive on your doorstep.

So, what can I do now?

Cass

Can you boot into safemode with command prompt?

Do you have any other user account other than the infected one?

I cannot boot into safe mode.  It will not boot into safe mode.  If I boot into safe mode, I get the blue screen, which I already described.  I give up early this time.  I am not going through a hassle just to get something fixed.

I will find someplace else to get help.

You will get help here. We just need to know if both topics are about the same computer. If they are the help will be given in this topic. It's much easier when everything concerning an issue is kept in one place.

Maybe a System Restore to a date before the blue screen is worth trying?
