Hello bleepers!  :busy:

So I jumped on my mother's Windows Vista PC (she is running Vista Home Premium) and I found she was running CyberDefender Early Detection Center as her sole antivirus protection software.  Due to the dismal online reviews for that particular piece of software I was concerned that she did not have adequate protection on the PC.  She ran a full scan with CyberDefender and assured me the PC was clean of virii, etc.  For some reason CyberDefender flagged 7-Zip as a virus and I am not entirely sure why, but aside from a few random tracking cookies that's all it found.

I was still a bit concerned so I ran a scan with MalwareBytes and it alerted me to 2 files which it labeled Trojan.FakeAlert - R66v.exe and ADOBE_FLASH_PLAYER.exe - Both in AppData\Local\Temp\Low.  Just for good measure I also scanned with SUPERAntiSpyware and sure enough, this program identified these two files as malicious, calling them Rogue.Agent/Gen.

If the r66v.exe file is what I think it is (information stealing trojan) I am quite concerned indeed, but with the Adobe Flash Player .exe I am not sure about that, my mother says she was recently prompted to update this program via a dialog box that she was certain was authentic, however I am concerned this is a Trojan masquerading as an Adobe product.  Looking around the various forums it appears there is in fact such a Trojan.

I haven't noticed any strange running processes or performance issues/odd behaviour with the PC fortunately.  I'm not, for example, getting redirected while browsing the web or anything, and I was able to download and install MalwareBytes and SAS without anything trying to stop me from doing so.

I have not attempted to remove either file with either program, instead I am opting to ask for guidance first.  Specifically what is the best way to completely remove the rogue files?  Is simply removing them using MB or SAS sufficient?

Also, regarding CyberDefender itself, to me it just looks like an ineffective antivirus program, but some people have told me it is ITSELF a Trojan / rogue software.  My mother has apparently paid for it already through Jan. 2014, and may be reluctant to uninstall it, but I am concerned about it.  Wondering if anyone knows more about this program and if it is a legit A/V or not.

Thanks for any info / help you guys can offer!  :)

Edit: Moved from Vista Forum to a more appropriate forum,

Since Malware is detected

Roger

Welcome aboard p22002758.gif

I strongly suggest you uninstall CyberDefender.

It's indeed very questionable software.

Install ONE of these:

- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

- free Microsoft Security Essentials: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials
Note for Windows 8 users: Microsoft Security Essentials comes preinstalled and renamed as Windows Defender.
You can keep it or you have to disable it before installing another AV program.  How to...

- free Comodo Antivirus: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/antivirus.php

Update, run full scan, report on any findings.

When done....

p22002970.gif Download Security Check from here or here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NOTE 1. If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.
NOTE 2 SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.

p22002970.gif Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

p22002970.gif Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

p22002970.gif Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

p22002970.gifDownload Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE
  • Unzip downloaded file.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • DO NOT click on the Cleanup button. Simply exit the program.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

p22002970.gif NOTE. Make sure all logs are pasted not attached.

Thanks for the quick and detailed reply.  I did uninstall CyberDefender and installed the free version of Avast which located the same two files described above, it labels them as trojan downloaders.  I don't see the export log function on this program but here are the filenames and paths:

    C:\Users\neuronurse\AppData\Local\Temp\Low\R66v.exe

    C:\Users\neuronurse\AppData\Local\Temp\Low\Adobe_Flash_Player.exe

    Threat: Win32:Downloader-HJA [Trj]

    Threat: Win32:Downloader-HJA [Trj]

Avast did also find some misc tracking cookies which I removed.

OK, I have performed all of the above, here is the info:

I see MBAM flagged a registry key as well as a proxy, I'm not entirely sure how to interpret that one.  Avast did not mention those items, only the .exe files.

Also, I am aware this log says no action taken, this was from a scan I ran before posting this thread at all, I did in fact remove all these items using MBAM as described in the steps above.

So I just rebooted my PC and now I will download the Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit.

OK I did run that and it found nothing.  Here's the log for MBAR:

After removing the files with MBAM, I'm not seeing them on either MBAM or Avast scans.

Let me know what else I need to do.  Thanks again!  :)

OK, TFC was a bit buggy, it kept hanging up and Vista automatically closed it but I do believe it was able to complete the cleaning the last time I ran it, it got to the end where it emptied the recycle bin and displayed the amount of data removed.

OK the ESET online scan took over 2.5 hours to complete, this is the only thing it found:

C:\Program Files (x86)\HP Games\Farm Mania\Farm-WT.exe

a variant of Win32/Kryptik.SH trojan

My mother's computer is a HP Pavilion Slimline desktop which came preloaded with Windows Vista Home Premium and a bunch of HP software such as "HP Advisor" (a desktop tool/search bar that automatically runs on startup) and some games, looks like ESET thinks one of this game's .exe files is a trojan.  I always disable HP Advisor whenever I boot.  I know my mom plays some of the HP games, but If you think this game has a trojan or spyware in it I have no problem removing it, but I'm wondering if it's a false positive.  I scanned this file with Avast and it didn't find anything wrong with it.

It looks like false positive.

Leave it alone.

How is computer doing?

Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

Thanks again for all the help :) , the PC is performing well, and as far as I can tell there are no more infected files.  I'm going to show my mother how to use Avast, as well as how to avoid malware in the first place, so that way she'll be able to stay safe when I'm not around.  I'm also trying to get her to use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer because I cannot seem to find a decent AdBlock-type addon for IE.

That alternative .pdf reader looks good, this is an older PC so anything I can do to cut down on wasted resources is really helpful.  I'm going to go ahead and install it right now after I uninstall Adobe Reader.

P.S.  I didn't see any spyware or toolbars in Foxit Reader, I'm going to run a spyware scan just to make sure I didn't install one by accident but during the install process I didn't see any options to install or not install any sort of toolbar, so I'm pretty sure there wasn't one.
