This one says U. S. Department of Justice across the top and accuses the user of...  breaking the law... visual records and sound recordings of which offence(s) are in posession of the authorities. They want a $300 fine paid to forget the whole thing.

First ran MalwareBytes and (can't remember) believe it foud a few trojans, but the desktop is still blocked  by the Justice Department's splash page when the computer is started in regular mode. I googled and found your instructions for one of the above named similar malware attacks.

Ran Emsisoft deep scan and it found 7 items, removed six, but desktop still blocked in other than safe mode. So found your instructions for the second partially named above kind of attack, which were a little more comprehensive, that is, included RKill.

When I ran RKill it was unable to close anything but produced a big warning:

Also went to delete something while in safe mode and got a never-seen-before box that says "Preparing to recycle". I tried to cancel and it just says "Canceling" - and the blue line keeps traversing L. to R. within the box. In addition there is a new box that says the Recycle bin is corrupted and asks if I want to empty it. Having emptied it recently, and deleted something successfully the last time the computer was in safe mode - when I ran one of the the two virus scans mentioned above, that is after this most recent virus attack - it occurrred to me these boxes might be malware, so left them alone.

Hello brucewhain

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with these just skip it and run the next one.

-Security Check-
  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
    • Save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
    • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
-AdwCleaner-
  • Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
    • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Click on Delete.
    • Confirm each time with Ok.
    • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
    • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
    • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
--RogueKiller--
  • Download & SAVE to your Desktop RogueKiller for 32bit or Roguekiller for 64bit
    • Quit all programs that you may have started.
    • Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
    • For Vista or Windows 7, right-click and select "Run as Administrator to start"
    • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
    • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
    • Then Click on "Scan" button
    • Wait until the Status box shows "Scan Finished"
    • click on "delete"
    • Wait until the Status box shows "Deleting Finished"
    • Click on "Report" and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
    • The log should be found in RKreport[1].txt on your Desktop
    • Exit/Close RogueKiller+
  • Gringo

Hey, Gringo! Well your lucky cause it's near the beginning of the month. Remember me? It took like six months to pay. Now - and in reference to that RogueKiller stuff must assume that I'm not violating the forum regulations insofar as I am capable of remembering them - but that bleep REALLY WORKS.

In a matter of seconds. And figure this might be making your job easier since last time I had to deal with a rootkit infection it required quite a lot of experimenting on the technician's part - that was before the time you helped me in Sept. 2011. Or is it? (making your job easier) Might be RogueKiller is hard on computers or something and you get complaints. It did reinstate some of the more obnoxious qualities of Windows 7 but am pretty sure it didn't wreck anything.

.

Here are the logs. That Windows Security Center is actually working I think, or it says it is when you go to it (This was before RogueKiller) but the notification icon was always marked in red after a certain update, and told you you had to start the Security thing. Then when you tried to start it, or to do whatever it was the icon was telling you to do, there was some error and it told you that the necessary data was unavailable right then, to try later. But no matter how many times one tried it it never worked, and the Security Center appeared to work ok anyway when I investigated it. At this point (after RogueKiller) the Security Center's icon is inactive, and for that reason, Windows says, it will not be displayed ...till it's active. (After playing around with the notification icon display business for a while and being unable to locate the Security Center's user interface otherwise without having to think about it...)

Will do a new scan with Security Check and post it right here:

There it is, still the same.

Some of those updates, like adobe - can't remember about java - and notably skype, were not allowed by Windows, no doubt after certain Windows Updates made it so, and have ended up using the same skype.exe for over two months now. Seems to work fine.

One other thing. Since getting recovered from the recent attack using RogueKiller, the internet connection here is having issues - Have confirmed this with the provider. - and the connection is really slow. But saw some things with Internet Explorer today that were weird and thought it might have been caused by the attack, though probably just the slowness of current connection. If two or more pages are open it sometimes gets them confused - this occurring when one page has just been opened and can display nothing except the address. (Sometimes they never get past that point with this connection.) The confusion of pages happened a few times, and one time there were two pages superimposed, with the one appearing askew, like it was contained in a three-dimensional box that extended behind the screen. Wierd. Oh, and one time after clicking an icon on Object Dock, the Object Dock performed correctly (Wordpad opened and the Object Dock retracted normally.) but the wordpad icon got permanently stuck to a webpage that was partially open. Had to close it. That's really the only unusual symptom(s) I can point to.

O yeh there were two folders apparently left by RogueKiller: One is the Quarantine, which I quess I should delete. The other has as it's title, first, my username for this computer, then a space-hyphen-space, then "Shortcut". It also has a little-green-chesspiece user symbol on the folder. This file was strange because on dragging it to the folder where stuff related to this recent attack is kept it copied itself. So that surprised me.

Here are the original logs:

Hello brucewhain

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

  • Gringo

I was wrong about the bad connection causing the trouble with IE. The connection is good now late at night, proven on the other computer. It does seem to me that Combofix improved the tendency of Object Dock to hang on opening, so maybe could go back to having it start when the computer is turned on, the way it's always been on the small acer that you worked on in 2011. This computer should not be slow. When copying the Emsisoft zip it took about one third the time the acer did yesterday, in safe mode.

Nonetheless sometimes it's better to give up and close the window, and start all over again than to wait for a webpage to load. This is strange: on the google search it opens immediately, super fast, On others not. One time it opened on this page immediately (just now) using a desktop link, but then when I got confused about which computer I was going to use to post this and closed the page, it wouldn't open from the desktop icon. Was necessary to go to google - and not by clicking on the bleeping computer link in the suggestions - Had to close the window once doing that. - but by googleing same, then going by way of My Content, etc. Must be a Deficient Connection Threshhold or something that it can't support.

Also, the Combo Fix .exe file copied itself when I moved it to the folder, leaving one on the desktop, but maybe that;s intended to do that.

(Had to give up and switch to the acer to upload this.)

Here's the files:

Hello brucewhain

I would like you to try and run these next.

TDSSKiller

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Note** this report can be very long - so if the website gives you an error saying it is to long you may attache it

If the forum still complains about it being to long send me everything that is at the end of the report after where it says

    ==================
    Scan finished
    ==================
  • and I will see if I want to see the whole report

    Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit

    1.Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit
2.Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
3.Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
4.Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
5.Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
6.Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
7.Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
8.If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:
    • •Internet access
      •Windows Update
      •Windows Firewall
9.If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the 'fixdamage' tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot.
10.Verify that your system is now functioning normally.

If you have any problems running either one come back and let me know

please reply with the reports from TDSSKiller and MBAR

    Gringo

Cant understand why the two computers would act so differently on the internet. Get the impression the three scans just performed found nothing and it may be that something has become broken or worn out coincidentally with this virus attack. When checking the firewall saw the thing to troubleshoot interent function and tried it - as IE was trying to connect to a website that was just connected to easily on the other computer. When IE froze the troubleshooter did to. (It was the one for the part in the computer that does wired connection.) On closing the page the troubleshooter closed too, and both the interent troubleshooters later ran fine and found nothing wrong.

Waited a while but couldn't open this page with the Lenovo. (It might eventually have opened but then could have easily frozen if the user got too aggressie with trying to get it to scroll.)

Here are the files. There were two from TDS SKiller. (One might be from the driver installing) There was one from the big MalwareBytes scan, and one from the other MalwareBytes scan. Will post the first TDS one here and the others below. hopefully.

Alright, will be skipping to No. 3. here, and will attempt to attach the big one, No. 2., to the last post consisting of No. 4.

Alright, will just post the end of No 2. (the big TDS SKiller file) here, because think this connection is getting dicey. Will attempt to post the log from the mbar.exe scan, No. 3, in a further post, and to do the attachment of the big No. 2 with a fourth post consisting of the 2nd Malwarebytes scan. (not mbar.exe)

And oh by the way, Happy Easter!

Unfortunately the Bold option in your toolbar is not responding right now, so this series of posts may be a bit inconsistent:

Could it be that the little computer (acer) has some internet functionality that allows it to load pages when the other one won't? It has a fancy mouse. Antway will try to attach the zip file here.

Hello brucewhain

Lets get a deeper look into the system and lets see if something shows up.

Download and run OTL

Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened and the that I need posted back here
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized - save this one on your desktop in case I ask for it later
  • Please post the contents of OTL.txt in your next reply.

  • Copy and Paste the following code into the customFix.png text box.
