Hi everyone,

The problem

Since about a week I'm getting bluescreens on my laptop while doing things my computer could easily handle before.

Since last friday I've had 4 already, which occurred:
- once while playing a mod map for CoD: World at War;
- once while watching a movie using media player classic;
- twice while playing CoD: Modern Warfare 2.

What I've tried

After the first three bluescreens I've:
- been running full system scans with a fully updated Malwarebytes Anti Malware and a fully updated Avast; both scanners didn't detect any infections;
- defragmented both disk partitions;
- used system restore to set back my computer to the settings from 10 days before the first bluescreen occurred;
- updated my graphics driver to the latest version.

This seemed to have worked since I didn't get any bluescreens after that for a few days, not even while playing games like CoD: Black Ops and Saints Row: The Third, but today it crashed again while playing Modern Warfare 2.

Some computer specs

Type: Asus X5QS laptop, model N55SF
Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 555m, running the latest 314.22 driver.
Processor: Intel core i7

I hope you guys can help me fixing these bluescreens; I'll provide any info necessary.
Thanks in advance.

Hello Fpz4488,

If we could gather a little more information about the problem computer, it might prove helpful in pointing toward a solution.

1. )  Please follow this link:  BSOD Posting Instructions Windows 8 - Windows 7 - Vista.

  • Follow all instructions with the exception of:
    • Create a new thread HERE and attach the file(s) after step 4
  • Note: Both files, autoruns and JCGriff2 BSOD collection app, of Step 1 need to be in the Documents folder.

Next, Upload the zipped folder to a File Sharing website of your choosing because Bleeping Computer has a 512 K only upload limit and this file will be much larger.

2. )  To help us get a better look at your computer's hardware, please download and install Speccy by Piriform. (mirror site)

  • Run Speccy and from the top menu, select File --> Publish Snapshot.  Click "Yes" to proceed.
  • Click, Copy to Clipboard and  paste this address into your next post.

3. )  Please download MiniToolBox by Farbar, save it to your Desktop, then run it.

  • Check the following checkbox:
    • List Installed Programs
  • Then click Go.
    • Highlight the contents of  Result.txt.
    • Copy (Ctrl + C), then Paste (Ctrl + V)  the contents of this file into your next post.

Regards,
Brooks

Hello Brooks,

First of all, thanks for your help and the prompt response.

While doing the "perfmon /report"-thing, I get the following error:

Error:
An error occured while attempting to generate the report.

The wait for the report generation tool to finish has timed out.

Here are the BSOD scan results though:
http://www.filedropper.com/windows7vistajcgriff2

Here is the Speccy report:
http://speccy.piriform.com/results/IFKT6WN1gGnSxgzp4DY7xXJ

And here are the MiniToolbox results from the Result.txt-file:

Hello Fpz4488,

Your computer is running more than one anti-virus program.

  • Multiple Anti-Virus programs, each  running with background protection activated, create a competitive state where one product can interfere with the other when dealing with an infection.  That coupled with increased computer resources required can cause your computer to run slowly, become unstable, less secure, and in rare cases, crash.
  • Please uninstall one of the following:

Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security
avast! Free Antivirus

You had only one minidump file collected and it was 3/29/2013 -  "VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116):

STOP 0x00000116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
Usual causes: Video driver, overheating, bad video card, ?BIOS, ?Power to card

Stop 0x116 VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE - What are they

It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception.

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash. As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds. If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating. Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU (**this is for a desktop only - added by Artrooks**). Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference. If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.  H2SO4

Your Speccy Snapshot points to a motherboard overheating problem which no doubt is either implicating or somehow affecting the graphics:

Motherboard:  ASUSTeK Computer Inc. N55SF (CPU 1): 86 °C
CPU:  Intel Core i7 2630QM @ 2.00GHz: 85 °C.  The maximum operating temperature for you processor is 100 C.

This all makes sense, because your BSODs are happening predominately when the CPU and Graphics are stressed (further increasing their temps).

What to do - you must get the heat under control:

Confirm that the motherboard and CPU temps are elevated by downloading and running a different temperature monitoring software such as HWMonitor.
  • If still overheating and if the computer is under warranty, then proceed by contacting the the manufacturer or seller for correction of this issue.
  • If still overheating and not under warranty, it probably will require some disassembly, an internal cleaning, and reapplication of thermal material to the graphics card and CPU. This is best performed by someone experienced in these procedures.

Brooks

Hey, thanks a lot for the help.
I've uninstalled the Trend Micro Internet Security software.

However, I'm not really sure how to get the heat under control any further.
When I sent you the info, my laptop's CPU and motherboard had an idle temperature around 85 degrees Celsius, but using my vacuum cleaner I've cleared the apparently clogged up exhaust exits, which brought the idle temperature to 60-65 degrees Celsius.
I've had Speccy installed before, and I believe that's the idle temperature it had not so long after I bought this laptop, which makes me wonder if it's possible at all to get it any cooler without having to buy a cooling pad or using other external means to keep it cool. I've been searching a bit and it seems not unusual for a lot of Asus laptops to have the idle temperature around 60 degrees Celsius.

While gaming though, the temperature of the CPU and motherboard rises to a 85-95 degrees Celsius temperature, which is dangerously close to the 100 degrees Celsius it will cause the laptop to crash.

Any thoughts?
And once again, thanks a lot for the help :)

Fpz4488,

When I sent you the info, my laptop's CPU and motherboard had an idle temperature around 85 degrees Celsius, but using my vacuum cleaner I've cleared the apparently clogged up exhaust exits, which brought the idle temperature to 60-65 degrees Celsius.

While gaming though, the temperature of the CPU and motherboard rises to a 85-95 degrees Celsius temperature, which is dangerously close to the 100 degrees Celsius it will cause the laptop to crash.

I can't imagine that continued use of the computer at those high temperatures will bring anything good.

A laptop cooler may offer some help in the short run; however, they are not terribly efficient at cooling.  Also, by adjusting Power Options in Control Panel to allow hard disk to power off and enter suspend state may help somewhat.

I think that ultimately that you will need to disassemble, give a good internal cleaning, re-apply thermal paste, and possibly even replace the CPU fan.  Since this can be tricky on a notebook computer, if you aren't experienced with these procedures, it might be best left to a professional.

Good luck.

Regards,
Brooks

Thanks again.
I've contacted the seller, they'll send someone to fix it.

Thanks for all the help!

Hi,

If you're problem is still here even you contacted the seller (i know what i'm talking about 'cause it happened to me, they didn't find the problem after they tested it, so they just resend me back my computer with factury set)

i found a topic on a french forum, and the guy just downgraded his graphic card. I did it with mine and there is no problem so far. I've got the same as you ASUS  N55SF

Download MSI After Burner and make 592 MHz to the clock core. Save it to the new profil and it's done.

I hope i've helped someone!

(Pardon my english, i'm french.)
