I am in the military and in between duty stations. On my last week I transferred some important files to my government sponsored portable hard drive and then to my personal lap top. I have done this before with no issues.

However, when I opened the folder with all of the stuff I've saved, they were somehow all converted into xml files.  They are still named with their original file extension as was required by my work network, so it is easy to tell which file was what, but when I try to open them with either the original program (such as MS Word or Adobe Acrobat) they will not open, nor will they open in the Windows 7 included XML editor.

A google search yielded nothing helpful, so I am hoping some of the experts on this forum could give me some advice on how to recover these files.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!
