Hi,
My son just bought a used Dell Insprion 1440, Windows 7 Home Premium, x64 based.  I've been cleaning it up for him and putting AntiVirus, Malwarebytes, CCleaner, etc on it for him.  The problem I'm having is when I went to the control panel to check System and Security, the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender were not working.  Well, I followed some advice I found online and got the Windows Defender to work, but keep getting an error message on the Windows Firewall.  I ran scans in safe mode and Malwarebytes found 3 Trojans.  It said they were quarantined and deleted.
Here's what it found:
Trojan.Zaccess
Trojan.Zaccess
Trojan.LameShield
Here's the error message I keep getting everytime I try to manually start Windows Firewall.
"Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.  Error Code 0x80070437".  When I was first trying to correct the Firewall and Defender the Error Code was 0x80070424.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Darlene

Malwarebytes

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. If you already have it installed launch the program and update the database.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on the it to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings except to uncheck any offer for a free Pro trial version
  • Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue.
  • Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes when done.

Note: If Malwarebytes encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes from removing all the malware.

Hi,

Here's the next set of logs.  When I ran the AdwCleaner I got a log before and after I rebooted.

I'll be awaiting your reply.  I've got to get on top of this, my son is getting anxious to use it, even

though I told him it has viruses.  How's it looking to you?

Thanks,

Darlene

That looks good

Remove temporary and junk files

Download Temp file cleaner from HERE.Launch it,it will close all running programs

click on START,it should ask for reboot. If TFC locks up the system, run it in safemode

Create a new restore point

Follow this guide to turn off and turn on your restore points

Windows XP

Vista & windows 7

Windows 8

Turn off your system restore-It deletes old infected restore points.Turn on system restore and create a new restore point

Update JAVA and Flash player

Uninstall old versions of java and flash player from control panel-Add or remove programs.Download the latest version from here

http://java.com/en/ & http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

Antivirus recommendations

Update your antivirus frequently. Two free antivirus that i would suggest are

Microsoft security essentials or Avast. You can select either one of them.

If you have a paid one, make sure to update it frequently.Do not use multiple security softwares.

Hi narnxp,

The computer is looking good.  Now my firewall is working.  I ran the TFC in safe mode as you stated lit locked up the system when I first tried to run it, but had no problelms running it in safe mode.  I Created a new restore point and uninstalled and reinstalled Java and Flash player.  Now I just need you to give me the OK that the computer is clean.  I do have another question for you.  How do I remove the old owners name from the computer.  I see her initals under user and other files.  I really do appreciate your help with this problem.  Next, I'll be putting in requests for help on my laptop & 10 yr old desktop.  My laptop showed 7 Trojans and Malwarebytes could'nt clear all of them & the desktop is freezing up when I'm online and locks up the whole computer.  I'll be awaiting your response.

Darlene

I dont know how you can see her initials under files. If it was manually done you need to remove it manually.

Go to control panel-user accounts and delete the old user account. This should remove old user folder.

narenxp,

I checked user accounts and only saw where I had changed it from her name to my son's.  I saw a folder with almost the same initals she used, therefore my confusion.

Ok, where do we go from here with this computer.  Is it clean now?  Can I move all the things you had me download and the logs to the recycle bin?  What was the problems with the computer?

I need to move to post for my 2 computers now.

Please advise the next steps.

Darlene
