Hello,

I have been having a number of problems with my laptop in the past day, the most recent being that it is running very slowly. I will start with the problems that i had before this and how i fixed them.

Last night I was not able to boot past the windows splash screen without being greeted by a BSOD. It indicated that a driver was preventing windows from being started. I searched this driver and saw that it was related to the program Daemon Tools Lite. I booted in to safe mode and removed this program, which allowed me to get to my desktop.

I did notice however, that despite being able to get on to my desktop now, It took an unusually long time to load past the spash and login screens. Once on my desktop, everything was running very slowly. Applications took a very long time to process and open, and even something as simple as a right click has a significant delay before bringing up the menu. Upon testing programs i learned that trying to interact with Google Chrome in any way (including attempting to uninstall) would result in my computer freezing and having to be hard reset. So once again I booted into safemode and removed then reinstalled Google Chrome. It no longer freezed my computer, but it has not solved the slow problem.

So just to summarize, everything is running very slowly regardless of how many processes are currently open. This includes trying to open programs, windows files and menus/taskbar. When in safe mode with networking, none of these problems occur.

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't use AVG antivirus anymore. Try removing AVG http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/avg-remover-2012/ and install free MSE instead http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download

How's the computer running?

Download Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.

The logon changes from Autoruns did not help, unfortunately.

I am trying to run Speccy now but am running into some problems. Trying to run it in non-safemode seems to be resulting in my computer freezing. Running it in safemode gives me this error, "CPU dll init failed (error 2)! Some information will not be displayed!" followed by a crash report saying that the application Speccy has quit unexpectedly.

Have you tried AVG first from your system using the removal tool? Let's check the hard drive.

How to obtain hard drive S.M.A.R.T data on a Windows system and then paste the report into a forum post

  • Download the GSmartControl installer application:
    • Go to the GSmartControl - Downloads page.
    • Scroll part way down the page to where the current version available for download will be displayed.
      gsmartcontrolwindowsdownload.png
    • Click on the link to download the installer file to your computer.
(There may be a mirror link there also which will enable you download the file if the main download link does not work for some reason.)
  • Double-click the downloaded application to run it and install GSmartControl on the computer.
Note: Vista/Win7 users, right-click > Run as Administrator
  • When installation is complete, run GSmartControl:
    • Start GSmartControl from the Start > Programs menu.
  • When the interface has loaded and scanning for hard drives is complete, click on the hard drive icon to select the device.
  • Go to Device on the top menu > View Details, and a new Device Information window will open.
  • Click on the Attributes tab to display the S.M.A.R.T data values.
  • Near the bottom of the window, click on View Output and a new Smartctl Output window will open.
  • Right-click anywhere inside that window > Select All.
  • Again right-click in that selected area > Copy.
  • Now paste that in a reply to your topic.
Note: Please enclose the pasted report in CODE tags so that the spacing/formatting is preserved (to make it easier for all to read).
    • Firstly, click on the "Insert code snippet" button Insertcodesnippetdetail2.png
You will then see the "start" and "end" code tags (highlighted in dark blue/selected in the image) in the text box.
    • Click between the two tags to insert the cursor between the tags and then press <Ctrl+V> to paste the report there.

The hard drive is healthy. Please remove AVG as instructed then check on the difference. Install the Microsoft Security Essential from the link above.

Download MiniToolBox and select
List Last 10 Event Viewers, List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory Size.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

Avg was just installed to have another scan to run after the problem started, It is now removed and is being replaced by MSE. It is taking quite a while to install however, so in the meantime here is the toolbox log,
