HI guys

When booting up my laptop in "last known good configuration" mode i keep getting the blue screen of death and the laptop freezes and cuts out and is very over heated. When i have booted up in "safe mode with networking" the latop is still over heating but it dosn't freeze or i don't get the blue screen of death. I am also limited to what i can doin safe mode.

Any ideas what the problem could be please chaps?

Thanks in advance

Tony

Exact wording of BSOD error message?

System manufacturer and model?

Conditions/events which may have led to this?

When did problem begin?

How long is "for awhile", please?

Let's try this:

Download/install BlueScreenView, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html .

Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file.

When autoscan is done (screen comes up), click Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items.

Save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt, copy all content and paste it into your next reply.

Louis

If this laptop is over heating I would suggest blowing it out with canned air.  If you can resolve the overheating issue this will help narrow down the cause of your problem.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I would uninstall the video drivers...then reboot and reinstall...before I decided to try anything else.  Seems to be a clear problem with the current ones or your video device/chipset.

Error doesn't occur in safe mode because the ATI drivers don't load in safe mode.

Ok so i took the back of the laptop off and the fan was full of dust so i cleaned it all off and that has solved the over heating issue. I then did a complete re-install of windows and re-installed the ATI Catalyst Control Centre and all drivers. The problem is still persisting on normal boot up but is ok when in safe mode with networking. I can watch youtube videos or any other media in safe mobe but no sound.

Why can i still watch videos in safe mode even though its still useing the ATI drivers ? but in normal boot up it keeps cutting out even though its still useing the ATI drivers.

Baffled !!!!

Hi

Recently i also faced an issue like this on a Dell inspirion laptop which is also have ATI graphics. It turns out that ATI graphic chip gone faulty due to the long term overheating caused by blocked vents.

As you reinstalled OS, clearly it is a hardware issue. It could be either a faulty RAM or ATI chipset. If your laptop do have more than one RAM card try plugging only one at a time to find the bad one.

Hello tony4173,

I tend to be in agreement with Anshad Edavana.   If the problem persists after an OS re-install, then it strongly points to a hardware problem.  A damaged graphics chip is certanly a contender, especially if excessive internal heat had been present for a long enough period in the past.

Hi tony4173

In safemode VGA driver won't really work like in a full boot. That's why you are getting 800*600 resolution in safemode. Features of graphics like 3D hardware acceleration are disabled in safemode. As VGA  driver won't use any of the clever functions of the card which means it isn't a proper test of the hardware so you can't really say that the card is OK just because it works in safe mode.

Because you have the following error I suggest that you read the information at the Microsoft Support website.

Error: (04/05/2013 05:36:41 AM) (Source: DCOM) (User: NT AUTHORITY)

The security update that is documented in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-015 does not install correctly if the Help and Support service is disabled

Any reason why you don't have Windows XP, Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed. That and all post SP3 updates should be installed before attempting any troubleshooting.

Get SP3 here.

Brooks

Without SP3 you can't get Windows updates for your computer.  Computers with Windows XP SP3 will be supported until April of 2014, so it is worth having.
