Its a Buffalo 500 GB Ministation (HD-PCU2( B)). The HD suddenly stopped being recognized on the system. I tried chckdsk but its taking forever. It says i need to format to use it, but i have data on it. The SMART report shows warning signs on 5. Reallocation Sector Count, 197. Current pending errors count and 198. Uncorrectable Errors Count. Can i recover the HD without formatting or is recovery the only option?

Will testdisk work for recover? Thanks.

Hi

That looks like the drive has some physical problems that may continue to get worse as you use it. You can try recovery software or recovering data using TestDisk but when you do that, the damage may become worse and the bad sectors can make it difficult for the recovery software to run properly.

If I had that drive, from what you've described, I would probably make an image of it with GNU ddrescue and then attempt to recover the files from the image. Then replace the drive and not use it anymore.

James
