Have noticed that my desktop's performance has suddenly slowed considerably and not sure if I am posting here in the right place.  Two weekends ago, performance was fine - click on a program or document, immediate response.  Now, the desktop boots up but when you click on anything, the response can vary from immediate (normal performance) to up to a two minute lag between click and the item showing up on screen, with most (8 out of 10) clicks resulting in the two minute lag.  Have not installed any new programs since the problem has arisen.

Additionally, have been receiving the following Windows pop-up message box:

TITLE:  Windows - Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance

DESCRIPTION:  Windows has detected your computer's performance is slow.  This could be because there are not enough resources to run the Windows Aero color scheme.  To improve performance, try changing the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic.  Any change you make will be in effect next time you log on to Windows.

MESSAGE BOX CHOICES:

(1)  Change the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic.

(2)  Keep the current color scheme, but ask me again if my computer continues to perform slowly.

(3)  Keep the current color scheme and do not ask me again.

Taking the option (1) to to change to Windows 7 Basic makes things a little better, but there still is quite a considerable lag (maybe down to 75 seconds between click and showing up on screen vs. 120).

Lastly and not sure if related, had an incident after the last time this PC ran normal as the audio card kept on cutting out.  Has not returned, but wondering if there is some type of hardware failure vs. a software issue going on here.

Desktop PC is a stock HP Pavillion p6610f running Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)

Stock was an AMD Athlon II 635 Quad-Core Processor, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, with ATI Radeon 4200 HD integrated graphics.  Windows Task Manager shows CPU usage skyrocketing then crashing, even when user is not subjecting the PC with opening new programs/documents.  Case has not been cracked open or modified, nor has this PC been moved in quite sometime.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NOTE 1. If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.
NOTE 2 SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.

p22002970.gif Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore

p22002970.gif Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

p22002970.gifDownload Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE
  • Unzip downloaded file.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • DO NOT click on the Cleanup button. Simply exit the program.

Just to note - after I initiated the reboot this AM when MBAM had finished removing the one item from the log above, this desktop would not complete a boot cycle and I had to pull the plug on it.  In fact, had to do that twice already this AM since I posted the first set of logs.  Seems like this third time has done the trick to get me the ability at least to run these tests, but still facing a significant lag issue when clicking/typing/opening programs/etc...

Also, for whatever reason and not sure if related to the above, seems that my external formerly known as Drive J is now known as Drive K, but that definitely was not a change that I made - drive is still plugged into the same USB hub port nor did I delete and remap.  That was the drive that had the issue that MBAM had identified during the full scan.

I still need MBAR logs.

You're running two AV programs, AVG and MSE.

You must uninstall one of them.

If AVG use AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities
