I have a HP laptop that is a couple years old. When I turn it on it goes to the screen that with the HP logo on it and the bottom left says "Press esc key for startup menu"

From here either the screen turns black with a little white hyphen/underscore thing flashing in the upper left corner or it stays on the HP Logo screen, flashing every few seconds.

I am able to go into the Startup Menu. A friend told me to press F9-Boot device options. It then takes me to a blue/gray screen called "Boot Option Menu" with two options: Notebook hard drive or Internal cd/dvd rom drive. I pressed the first one (notebook hard drive) but then it goes back to the Hp Logo screen... an annoying cycle :(

My friend said it could be a problem with my hard drive and I should get a new laptop.

Is this true? Anything else I could do??

Also, if the laptop is done for I have a lot of important stuff saved on it that I did not back up... Would I be able to somehow save all my documents onto a CD?

Thank you so much for your help!
