Hello,

I am helping a friend who has the DoJ malware.  When the computer boots, a screen interrupts the loading of the desktop to kindly inform me that they are holding the computer ransom and will "unlock" if a fee is paid.

I found a forum post http://malwaretips.com/Thread-united-states-department-of-justice-virus, that talks about this.  I have booted into the OTLPE environment and have a log.

But I wanted to engage with this forum because I've received help here recently and was very impressed with how thorough the moderators are.

Can anyone help me properly remove this malware?

Thanks!

Excellent.  Thanks for the reply.  I was able to select the system restore, but in trying a few different restore points it fails.

An unexpected error occurred during System Restore (0x80070002).

I'll keep trying different restore points.

I tried pretty much every restore point and they all fail.  I can't boot into Safe Mode as it simply cycles out of Safe Mode and back into normal boot operation.  Any suggestions from here?  Very much appreciated!!

Please follow the instructions given here

http://support.kaspersky.com/8005

You need either a DVD or flash drive. Please follow the instructions. After scan finishes, restart the PC and see if that helps. If you can boot into normal mode we can use other scans to make sure system is clean.

Ran the unlocker tool and then followed up by running the Kaspersky Rescue Disk.  I can now boot into the desktop.  The Kaspersky Rescue Disk did find and delete a virus.

Edit... I then followed up by running MBAM and it found a Trojan.  I had it removed and will run MBAM again.

Download Services repair tool from here

  • Double-click ServicesRepair.exe
  • If security notifications appear, click Continue or Run and then click Yes when asked if you want to proceed.
  • Once the tool is finished you will be prompted to restart your computer. Click Yes to restart.

Run Farbar service scanner again and post the new log
