Hi :)  I'm going to apologize before hand because I am not a computer person so if I don't use the right terminology, sorry!

I have a HP laptop running Windows 7...

So a while ago my laptop got the SMART HDD virus. All the icons on my desktop were made hidden, as well as in my Start Menu and the pinned items in my taskbar.

Luckily, I was able to follow the instructions at this link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-smart-hdd

and was able to get rid of the the virus-thing last night.

I also did this: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/topic/46010-how-to-restore-start-menu-and-files-hiddendeleted-by-a-virus/

as the folders in the Start Menu in "All Programs" kept showing up as "(empty)"

Anyways, that is all fixed now and the folders are fine.

Only thing is that the Start Menu is still missing the Programs/Folders on the right side - like where it usually says "Documents," "Control Panel," "Pictures," etc. The only one there is Computer.

Also, all the things I had pinned to my Task bar are no longer there. And anything I do pin doesn't show up.

If someone could help me I would reallllllly appreciate it.

I'm good with computers but I don't know like the big words you guys use or stuff like that so if you could make it a little bit more simpler and descriptive that would be awesome. :)

-Jasmine

What about the programs folders? Please expand it and let us know if you find icons and files under each startmenu folder.

I'm not seeing any pictures. You can upload the image to file sharing website and upload it here

If startmenu folders have all their files and icons, try this

Right click on your startmenu-properties

Check mark

store and display recently opened programs
store and display recently items

Click on customize

Click on Use default settings at the bottom

and click ok

This should restore "Documents," "Control Panel," "Pictures," etc.
