You could always try booting into safe mode, and going into user account settings, and removing the password, and then setting up a new latter. Its a bit unconvental though it works. To get into safe mode just hold F8 on your keyboard then once the list of options comes up select the first one by pressing enter. You can also simply try the forgot password method if he had set a hint when he created the password, or whoever set up the password in any case.

You can reset your password online if you used a microsoft email account. If its a local account officially you will have to reinstall Windows 8.

Hi , Stll no luck the furthest we have got when we put the incorrect password in ie "inset reset password disc".  so cannot get to Mothers password which we were told had to be put in to install windows 8..  is it looking like a complete start all over again ? He has tried every possible spelling of what he thinks he entered and still nothing and pressing F8 does not work. could it be a virus  ?

The problem has not yet been identified.  Was this set up with a Microsoft Account (hotmail, live.com or outlook.com email address) or a local account.  If local account, you need to reinstall the operating system.  If a microsoft account, go to https://account.live.com/password/reset.

It has been documented by Microsoft how to reset your password HERE any other means of bypassing the password would violate our forum rules.
