"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconveniece"

This has been popping up daily for the past month, often even when I'm not on the internett. I've run Norton virus full scan a number of times, but no problems. Any suggestions? Thanks!

As I was copying the below, the "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" popped up again. I clicked "close", but the odd thing is Internet Exploerer never actually closes when I do this.

Are you experiencing redirects?

Did you try resetting your IE?

Not experiencing any redirects. Not sure about Resetting Internet Explorer -- Do you mean removing it and reloading it? Havn't tryed that. I do find it strange IE doesn't kick me off when the window  "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" pops up.

Follow this guide to reset IE

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

if that doesnt, configure  a clean boot using this guide

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Restart the PC and let me know if IE works now.

If both these options fail, then try reinstalling IE.

Well, I tried resetting IE to no avail and then deleted IE in order to reload it. Unfortunately when I restarted the computer a black Windows screen came up saying the following file was missing or corrupt <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.   I do have the original software disk which came with my Windows XP Home Edition, but I can't get it to load or even change the screen it's stuck on using any of the commands such as F2, F8, or F12.

Still working from another computer......Unfortunately the software recovery disk was for Windows 2000 Prof, not Windows XP which is on my computer. I did figure out F2 & F12 do work after hitting them many times. I imagine I could download <windows root>\system32\hal.dll, from a website to a USB Flash Drive, but I certainly don't have the know how of where to download it onto the non-working computer.

In any case...I would not suggest downloading Windows system files...from websites, other than Microsoft.  MS does not make system files available for rouitine download, preferring to put such on install media.
