Hi, this follows on from a thread I first posted in the "Am I Infected?" forum after I found that someone in this forum helped someone else suffering from the same infection; my problem was described here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/488784/trojan-hidermpr/

To reiterate, AVG keeps finding an infection in my girlfriend's laptop: Hider.mpr that it can't get rid of.

When I first log in, it warns me about:

Trojan horse Hider.MPR

Object name: c:\Users\Mary\AppData\Local\Temp\qffnjhpt.sys

If I try and fix it, or ignore it, then scan for rootkits, it warns me about:

Hidden driver

\Device\mfeavfk01.sys

It tries to get rid of it, and thinks it succeeds, but fails. I've checked the MBR with aswMBR etc. for what it's worth. A further complication is that her laptop seems to have no internet connectivity any more; every tool I've tried running has to be installed via a USB key. If anyone could advise me as to the risks of spreading the virus because of this, I'd be grateful. (My laptop is a Macbook, OS X 10.8.2; ClamXav returns nothing when I scan the USB stick, but I'm not sure that means a great deal.)

Thanks in advance.

Hello rwold

Welcome to The Forums!!

Around here they call me Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with these just skip it and run the next one.

-Security Check-
  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
    • Save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
    • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
-AdwCleaner-
  • Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
    • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Click on Delete.
    • Confirm each time with Ok.
    • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
    • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
    • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
--RogueKiller--
  • Download & SAVE to your Desktop RogueKiller or from here
    • Quit all programs that you may have started.
    • Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
    • For Vista or Windows 7, right-click and select "Run as Administrator to start"
    • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
    • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
    • Then Click on "Scan" button
    • Wait until the Status box shows "Scan Finished"
    • click on "delete"
    • Wait until the Status box shows "Deleting Finished"
    • Click on "Report" and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
    • The log should be found in RKreport[1].txt on your Desktop
    • Exit/Close RogueKiller+

Hi Gringo, thank you for your help! I believe it was you that helped the person in the other thread I read suffering from this infection.

The link to securitycheck.exe unfortunately looks broken to me.

In the course of running RogueKiller, the the computer asked me to restart the computer in User Account control mode; I ignored this, as RK seemed to be running unimpeded and I don't want the virus running as an admin.

AdwCleaner: After the reboot, I got a popup entitled User Account Control asking if I wanted the following program to make changes to my computer:

Prog. Name: Windows Command Processor

Verified Publisher: Microsoft Windows

Location:

"C:\windows\SysWOW64\cmd.exe" /C

""C:\Users\Mary\AppData\Local\Temp\wnadfasb.exe"" admin

I Chose "No", and the message keeps reoccurring, which stopped me from accessing the log for ages; I managed to get it minimized by clicking on "Change when these notifications appear" then very quickly clicking on "cancel" in between popups.

Having had a quick look at the roguekiller log, I'll point out again that as the infected laptop has no internet connectivity, I'm installing all of these tools by downloading them on my macbook and transferring them via a usb stick, the previous use of which was as a boot stick for ubuntu.

Thanks,

Rob

Hello rwold

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

  • Gringo

Hi, I've had a few problems with this unfortunately. Combofix kept launching to a window with black background with green text which kept vanishing. I renamed it on the usb and recopied it, and then it started to run properly, but generated a message about the virus scanners still running. I'd disabled all the antivirus software, but Combofix warns me that antivirus scanners are still running: McAfee and AVG. I've followed all the instructions given in your link, tried all the obvious ways of disabling the scanners, and gone as far as trying to end processes via the task manager, but combofix keeps giving me the message that proceeding may lead to unpredictable results or possible machine damage.

Thanks again for your continued help.

Hello rwold

I would like you to try and run these next.

TDSSKiller

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Note** this report can be very long - so if the website gives you an error saying it is to long you may attache it

If the forum still complains about it being to long send me everything that is at the end of the report after where it says

    ==================
    Scan finished
    ==================
  • and I will see if I want to see the whole report

    Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit

    1.Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit
2.Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
3.Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
4.Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
5.Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
6.Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
7.Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
8.If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:
    • •Internet access
      •Windows Update
      •Windows Firewall
9.If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the 'fixdamage' tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot.
10.Verify that your system is now functioning normally.

If you have any problems running either one come back and let me know

please reply with the reports from TDSSKiller and MBAR

    Gringo

Hi Gringo -success! TDSS (which I'd already tried) didn't find anything, but that malware bytes tool seems to have cleared it up. I originally couldn't update the definitions because of the connectivity issues with the laptop, but luckily the ones it had seemed to be enough to clear everything up, once I'd run that fix damage tool as well. Logs below. Thanks so much for your help!

A couple of things I am still wondering about, if you can spare some more time.

Firstly, how can I better protect her computer? Would you recommend any free anti-virus software in preference to AVG? I remember being told that you should only have one antivirus installed on a system, but it seems like there's lots of other distinct software like rootkit scanners that should really be used to complement an ordinary AV suite?

Secondly, do I need to worry about my USB stick, or even my Mac, being infected?

Finally, are there any resources you'd recommend as reading to someone who would like to know more about this stuff?

Thanks again,
Rob

Okay, had a couple of issues with Spybot S&D; it never seemed to quit properly. I ended up just removing the program. The first couple of times I tried to run it I got error messages of the type you warned me about- registry keys being marked for deletion etc., so I restarted like you said. Eventually (after restarting, after uninstalling spybot) it worked ok.

Thanks.

Oh, and as for how it's working: seems to be generally ok. Chrome doesn't seem to be working well, but that I think is a long standing issue that I've never bothered to get round to trying to fix.

Hello rwold

We need to reset Chrome back to defaults to completely clear out what is going on.

We can keep the bookmarks by exporting them - Export Bookmarks

Then I need you to go Google Sync and sign into your account

scroll down untill you see the "Stop and Clear" button and click on button

At the prompt click on "Ok"

Now we need to uninstall chrome

I want you to uninstall Chrome and if asked about user data or settings then remove this also

restart the computer and reinstall chrome, You can download The latest version from here - Google Chrome

After you have Chrome reinstalled please check things out and let me know how it is doing.

Hi, I don't know my gf's password for syncing Chrome, so I skipped to uninstalling then reinstalling it and it seems to be working fine.

Thanks.

Update: Just ran a full computer scan with AVG, and it detects the following:

Detection name: Trojan Horse Generic32.IBE

Description: C:\Users\Mary\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\9\1375bc9-53e8a428

It claims to have moved it to the virus vault. Will restart and rescan and see if anything comes up.

AVG finds nothing after the restart.

Sigh. Just scanned again, and the same virus is back in the same location:

Detection name: Trojan Horse Generic32.IBE

Description: C:\Users\Mary\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\9\1375bc9-53e8a428
